To be honest, my results in the organic lab were so poor that studying the spectra of failed synthesis would have been more helpful to decipher my products.

There are some resources online for simulated IR spectra. One I found was www.cheminfo.org/Spectra/IR/E...

You can draw/select a structure and it generates the spectra. You could screenshot them and save them in a set of PowerPoint slides. You’d be able to select the ones most useful for you.

Over at the Bad Place, I made a tradition of posting Douglass' "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth of July," and I intend to carry on that tradition here. Since most versions you read in classes or in textbooks have parts omitted, the link below has the full text of the speech.

Jer Thorp did an interesting collaboration with his mother looking at textile as a digital art. His mother is a weaver and he is a data artist. As other commenters have noted, you are definitely not wrong. Good reminder to keep Art in science and vice-versa

The absolutely wild thing is: This goes for ALL social aid. Just *giving people some fucking money,* literally going "OK, how much did you need?", cutting checks, and waving them out the door? COSTS LESS and HAS BETTER OUTCOMES than the current system's bureaucracy and means testing, EVERY TIME.

It doesn’t help when publishers like the Atlantic roll over and offer a license after the theft has happened. Like leasing your car to the thief who stole your car.

I was making this comparison just the other day to my wife. Absolutely unconscionable actions by the prosecutors in the Swartz case and complete silence when it comes to blatant violations of the law by these grifters.

i don’t know shit about cricket, and i am not a sports guy in general, but i think it’s fantastic to see americans who weren’t born here put on the colors and represent us with pride, that is the whole entire fucking point of america, even though we often forget it, they’re just as american as me

That foreigners want to come to America, and that some of those foreigners are the best in the world at the things they do, and then because of that, America gets to be the best in the world at the things those immigrants do on behalf of everyone, is literally the super power part of the super power

Funny. A version of ran through my mind recently. It’s probably the fact that it usually happens at celebrations, but it does seem to elevate the connection between, and happiness of, its participants.

These folks did a great job of breaking, well, *all* the leading LLMs by asking the models an incredibly simple question. These models should not be relied upon to assist anyone with reasoning. Check out the appendix with examples of truly wild confabulations and errors

I’d love to see this adopted widely. That along with some regulation around exterior lighting. I mean, that’s nice topiary, random homeowner, but we don’t need to see it in the dark too.

OpenAI is now a company that: -keeps all of its training data and key operations secret -forced employees to sign powerful NDAs or forfeit equity -won't say whether it trained its video generator on YouTube -lies to movie stars then lies about the lies "Open." What a farce.

I started in MS in a lab studying disaccharide fragmentation patterns. standards were injected neat in acn:water, no need for anything else when the sodium adducts lit up in the spectra just fine. Might add a little acid here and there to get a protonated adduct for comparison.

Absolutely endorse this. My daughter and I found one yesterday with used books of every genre and language. Also, jewelry and a collection of unworn women’s hats from the 20’s and 30’s. It was a 15’ wide warren of shelves. They were playing classic French songs and had a friendly dog. Recommend.

Some folks avoided the COVID vaccines. Then there is a German fellow collecting vaccinations like there’s a prize for the winner. At least 217 before he was found out. He volunteered to be studied.

The team at Immune have a good discussion of the resulting paper.

These cuts and cuts to other areas of research are so frustrating. Right when we need billions invested into these areas to grapple with the results of decades of inaction on global warming. It’s like cutting the lines on a suspension bridge to save money on rope. The crocodiles wait below.

I think it’s generally been driven by the desire for companies to commodify and control all aspects of their manufacturing. There is some aspect of consumers leaning into purchasing food and beverages from known entities, but that’s not new. Some only buy Henri’s fromage, others from any monger.

Could it be that the material related to the math and physics in the higher levels is less accessible to the scraping/training methods that were used to build the models? The sheer volume of textbooks, course materials and “how-to-pass ‘X’” is likely greater than that of upper level math and physics

I will go to my grave believing that getting out of Afghanistan was an act of great political courage, and that anyone who is in general against war, or claims to support the troops, or for any other reason thinks we should not keep fighting out of inertia and the hope for a miracle, should say so.

As always, the thing about AI isn't that it's good enough to replace humans (because it's patently not, despite what they try to tell you), it's that the people holding the purse strings believe it is good enough to save them the money they pay the humans.

Does anyone running these opinion polls try to correlate them with actual economic indicators and publish them side by side? Besides public opinion, it would be good to have the context of how that opinion reflects actual economic performance? Best to use several measures, not stock indices.

By their measure, every company is already a technology company. It’s just the wrapper they use to sell to the rubes and/or impress their rich friends. I imagine Uber’s CEO doesn’t like to be reminded they’re the head of a Taxi company, though that’s what it is. (No disrespect to DeVito)
