Ever been behind an old car or truck that is just blowing pollution that you can see and smell? Remember how it feels in your lungs? Trump’s Project 2025 is like that.

There's nothing particularly savvy and wise and profound in the observation that Trump is a monster, and his election would have republic-endingly bad consequences to everyone living in the US, but it is still true, and it is still the most useful thing newspapers could write about the race

the fact that we can look at most major problems with our lives and guess "this is the fault of private equity" - and have that actually be correct a shockingly large percentage of the time - is an excellent reason to regulate the industry into the ground

A big reason the media is so resistant to legitimate criticism is that when they do a perfectly straightforward report on a new financial disclosure, they get unfairly accused of scandal-mongering. Why bother to listen if this is your reward?

People keep saying "how is this allowed" and, lemme tell ya, the reason it's allowed is that our country's regulatory system for motor vehicles is utterly moribund, comprehensively captured by industry, intentionally crippled, and not remotely up to the chllange of today's vehicles, is how.

Remarkable: DC's transit system is now leading post-pandemic ridership recovery compared to NYC Transit, Boston MBTA, Chicago CTA & SF BART. Despite fact that DC had the 2nd-biggest ridership drop-off at beginning of pandemic. What's worked? WMATA has really improved service.

If state govs deployed the military to enforce traffic laws it would rightfully be decried as totalitarian overreach despite the fact that traffic deaths have skyrocketed since the pandemic. But since transit riders are seen as subhuman it's fine to hold them up at M16-point for a photo op

A huge chunk of content from pro-fossil media voices basically consists of taking the greenwashing decisions of corporates and then presenting them as if they're a summary of the climate or environmental movement (also see: plastic bags)

We need root and branch reform of the MD DMV for starters. And perhaps police that actually do something about all the unregistered and uninsured MD-plated cars.

Oh yeah, not saying it's a panacea by any means, but certainly seems better than not trying to get the suburban SUV drivers to pay their fair share. And of course it would be better if Paris residents were included. (DC does deserve credit on that front w/ the recent change to registration fees)

I'm no expert on Parisian geography or commuting patterns, but the Paris metro area has ~11 million people vs. ~2m in the city itself, so this may not be totally insignificant. I'd love to see DC try to do more about Md. & Va. drivers, for example. The low turnout is odd though

“Of course they need to make money—these aren’t charity projects” Well, why not? Like, why do the news outlets need to make money? They’re billionaires! Bezos has more money than he could ever spend. Andrew Carnegie was a massive dick but at least left a ton of public library buildings in his wake.

Taking jobs and turning them into "entrepreneurship" sucks. They made it so you have to start a small business, with all the bullshit that entails, to be a journalist. Journalists, artists, fucking delivery drivers, these people should have jobs, not a pile of 1099s and platform access precarity.
