Formerly @flyfishsalt on Twitter. Celtics fan for 60+years. Johnny Most & Tommy were right. The other team was using knives and axes. Call those fouls! I can’t fish any more, so I tie flies for Healing Waters, a program of Wounded Warriors. Be kind.

When I began fly fishing back in 1988, I begrudgingly accepted insects and bugs as necessary albeit still annoying. That mellowed into sincere appreciation over the years. Couple that with my relatively newfound wildflower obsession and you could say I love the little guys now. Involve yourself.

The bird of the day in my backyard is the Tauhou/ Silvereye. They’re too fast for me to catch a photo of so here’s one the internet prepared earlier. 🪶

Spot-winged Falconet (Spiziapteryx circumcincta) at the Aduanas Border Crossing Station, Bolivia. We saw many of these on both sides of the border, they hunt among other things Monk Parakeets which are not that much smaller than they are. #birds

Mud Run Natural Area, PA

This is like how I am🤔
While I always enjoy being in nature, I can't seem to get rid of the worries in my mind🤔

Check all the way back - seems like they are modifying the natural landscape near Interstate 476🙁

Speaking of “don’t drink raw milk”, a timely reminder that it’s not just flu that makes pasteurization the lifesaving innovation that it is.

Also that if you let manufacturers ignore safety, they will, and they’ll *keep* doing it.

Can we just talk about this plot for a second? There’s several disparities here that give me pause, but the one that really makes me want to kick people is the 3rd set down, parents of minors vs. not. I don’t have kids. I don’t want kids. BUT I *DO* WANT MY TAXES TO FEED HUNGRY KIDS! WTF, people.

The river fishing is known in North Karelia, but when the water temperatures get high I fish the large lakes. Sometimes it is better than anything I’ve seen and it is closer by. I don’t use oil or even engines for this. Perch and pike are abundant here.

Besides filling up the marshes, the June rains also brought out a lot of insects! We might not like the mosquitoes, but a lot of birds sure do! This barn swallow, along with some of its friends, was swooping around the marsh looking for bugs!🪶

One of the boys of summer! Showing off that cool throat patch and very awesome bright yellow.
There is another male just a few feet to the left - thus the ‘beak to the sky’ posing 😄 They were both doing it!

Every winter, Hudson Bay creates brand new sea ice. As evidenced by these floes that were left beached by the receding tide, the ice gets extremely thick. It was so cool to see these. It’s quite late in the year for them. 🌿

Most sharks today are benthic (bottom-feeders) & this research indicates most ancient sharks had a benthic or benthopelagic origin. The authors posit that spreading anoxic areas on the seafloor prompted some sharks to move up into the open water. #paleontology #palaeontology 🧪⚒️

If Trump has “no idea” who the authors behind Project 2025 are, he’s showing an alarming cognitive decline. He appointed most of them to roles in his administration! Project 2025 is, in short, the plan to implement what Donald Trump has said he wants to do if he’s reelected.

There is a hot spring in Germany I’ve seen in YouTube videos with multitudes of introduced aquarium species. People shouldn’t do it, but it is amazing & rather neat to see them. Of course there are lots of mollies reproducing there.

Max critical temperature (CTmax) is as hot as a fish can get before it experiences lethal heat stress. Centrarchidae is a thermally tolerant group of freshwater fishes with some (including largemouth bass and bluegill) capable of surviving briefly above 100°F!

Mud Run Natural Area, PA

I spent about 7 hours from sunrise until past noon in the #wilderness, fly fishing, but mostly bushwhacking and hiking. I am nicely tired😊
The water was cold for a hot summer day 😉

I think I am ready to go back to work tomorrow 🤔

Hawk Falls Trail, PA

This leads to the popular Hawk Falls. But instead of heading to Hawk Falls, I went into the #wilderness 😉

I was the first at the trailhead in the morning, but when I returned after 7 hours of wandering, a few park rangers were directing traffic😊
