The only people who've ever held Trump meaningfully accountable over the last nine years have been ordinary Americans and they've spent that entire time being lectured to and berated by elites who've failed to do anything.
At some point an ordinary American is going to come to a very predictable conclusion about Trump and justice and those same elites will continue to lose their minds while everyone else is like, "of course."
These same folks are also the ones who keep telling us that, actually, institutions holding him accountable would be taking the will away from the voters...who as you point out are ready for some fucking accountability.
Can you give me an example of an ordinary American who has held Trump meaningfully accountable?
I mean, E. Jean Carroll fits that bill, but I haven't seen where she was lectured to and berated.
💀🇺🇸 This just accentuates where we are in this mango-makeupped; #stochastic#terrorist-ridden, #gun stuffed country where #jurists are considered "brave" to serve in a basic civic duty.
A general theme these days is the demand that everyone play by the same rules whether ordinary people or filthy rich bastards. Justice is supposed to be blind, but I was not sure that this verdict would happen. Yay for small victories!
If anything happens to Trump, it will be at state level. Trump knows too much about our Intelligence gathering and other sensitive issues to risk any public testimony from him. If you think this reflects poorly on our politicians, business men and LE/Intelligence people, you are right.
Elites have caused this situation with Trump and Russia, and the people are ones who have suffered. From election security to the judicial process, the people at the top have not been good enough.
Feels like the Democratic leadership's new "strategy" to win elections is to make sure that the survival of democracy is always on the ballot, which feels like an insane gamble to make when you have their track record.
Sort of. Plus the DA and the prosecution team. And a judge who takes the law AND his role seriously. But I am exceedingly happy that this jury did its duty and apparently in the face of fear they will no doubt face doxxing and people lashing out at them. And that is a key to our justice system.
You misspelled 'Americans who have access to elite legal services,' but OK.
Next, examine the neoliberalism that enjoys the same elite protection and is instrumental in Trump's political relevance.
Project 2025 and their ilk are no-doubt thinking if it's time to find a new front man. TFG is increasingly toxic and oligarchs are only really concerned about money. The switch could come quite suddenly.
On the one hand, ok - but on the other hand, more "ordinary Americans" voted for him in 2020 than in 2016...so I'm not sure I'd hold up ordinary Americans as that much better...
Absolutely true!
I don’t have energy to do it but it would interesting to run through the NYT from 2016 on and see how long it took them to characterize something Trump said as “a lie”.
All this nonsense post-2016 about how Trump's victory illustrated the dangers of the democracy when most people voted against him. Twice now. Meanwhile the holy institutions we're all supposed to be praying to and prostrating ourselves before have saved or elevated him at every opportunity.
