The absolutely wild thing is: This goes for ALL social aid. Just *giving people some fucking money,* literally going "OK, how much did you need?", cutting checks, and waving them out the door? COSTS LESS and HAS BETTER OUTCOMES than the current system's bureaucracy and means testing, EVERY TIME.

Men, and white cis men especially, talking openly about your pay to your coworkers is one of the best actions of workplace solidarity you can do for this very reason.

this is legitimately good news in the midst of what i assume will be a grim week. now let’s see if the FL apparatus gets back up and doesn’t fold regardless.

FWIW, I have never been able to grow catnip/mint outside because cats will decimate it by eating it and rolling ecstatically in it. The outdoor picture looks dry and maybe needing some balanced fertilizer, tho I am no expert

Or, in my case, you go on the statins and continue to consume all the butter. There is no advice in this comment, only history.

Not to mention that even well trained humans are crap at deciding who is a potential danger. Recently retired licensed psychologist here, always said no to being asked to do screenings for security/police weapon approval. We do not have good predictive data!!

Oh… that’s because in the 60s and 70s there were no word processors. Only typewriters.

YES. Arts support brain development in an essential manner, as well as allowing for diversity and joy. As does movement, also missing even in many elementary schools.

I’m gonna post about this until it gets talked about more: ever wonder why the rental market got so high priced? This is it, my friend. Price fixing via algorithm. The big rental companies use the same software to set pricing.

ICYMI: The face of a Neanderthal woman excavated from Shanidar Cave in Iraqi Kurdistan in 2018 has been reconstructed, and I kind of love it. Another Kennis Twins reconstruction, because they just cannot stop being the best in the game.

800,000 imprisoned people in the US produce $10 billion of value each year through their labor. $2 billion for private industry. The state of Alabama alone makes $450 million off the labor of incarcerated workers.

We have a word for this.

Amazing to see this: at UNC, faculty, instructors, and TAs are withholding grades to demand amnesty for arrested and suspended students.

Toss some money to the UFW Foundation, the non-profit advocacy and aid wing of the United Farm Workers, because without farm workers we all starve. Even my agricultural ass.

UBI is not about giving free money to the poor. UBI is about creating a social structure so that your life and the lives of your loved ones won't be destroyed if misfortune should befall you. THIS is the framing that needs to be used.

If you DO subscribe via KU, you need to OPEN the magazine and flip the pages for the magazine to get paid. It's like Netflix: doesn't count for ratings until you watch the show, no matter how long it sits on your list. Other ways to support: Weightless Books, Patreon, Kickstarter, etc.

In researching the next book a trauma expert told me offhandedly she believed most political issues and controversies came down to an argument over whether kids and young people should suffer the same abuse as the previous generation and boy oh boy is that on my mind a lot recently.

I was at Ohio State when the Kent State shooting happened. And my memory is of walking past the National Guardsmen on campus, with their guns, and seeing the terror in their faces. Which in turn, terrifies me.

I think it’s a really, really bad idea to tell people that it’s antisemitic to be angry about people starving, children dying, and aid workers trying to solve that being targeted in direct strikes.

I was in college at Ohio State from ‘68-72. The same month that Kent State shooting happened we had National Guard and police responding to sit in and mass protest. Noting new here.

One of the first protests I attended was a teach-in at Pomona College about the first Gulf War. I was a freshman in high school. People who act like the students here are doing unprecedented things are just lying to you.

🧪One of the silver linings of the pandemic was that the restrictions eliminated the Yamagata lineage of type B influenza—a viral source of death and disease, especially among children. Scientists now say it might be possible to eliminate a second strain, leading to the end of influenza B worldwide.
