as someone who has spent immense sums fixing my teeth even with dental insurance, anything we can do to move them out of the luxury bones category is a welcome development
two years ago i spent like $9k on wisdom teeth extraction that had bad complications and i got quoted $20k last year to correct the issue which i couldn’t afford to do. dental insurance said they could knock off $2k from negotiated price and cover $1k which i couldn’t/can’t afford still
Yeah. Due to basic clumsiness/bad luck, I broke my leg… more than once. I think I’m gonna end up less than $1k out of pocket on that (maybe even counting prescriptions?). Due to basic clumsiness/bad luck, I also smashed my 4 front teeth. I have NO IDEA how much that’s gonna be ‘all-in’ but over $10k
There’s a fair amount of voodoo in the way dentistry is currently practiced. Maybe having greater oversight of the practice that would come with government coverage could flush out some of the woo-woo nonsense.
Biden is in this weird space where I vociferously agree with everything he does, except for a handful of things where I think he is the worst human alive.
As someone presented with the choice of fixing his teeth or paying for IVF, it would be nice to not have to deal with things actively rotting in my skull.
Luxury Bones is still a term swimming around in my head. What a great band name, but also a great term implying that care for these “daily driver” bones is a luxury.
Makes no sense to me that vision and dental are always separate.
I’m surprised the GOP doesn’t try to separate gynecological healthcare or mammograms given how much they obviously hate women.
I have a dental discount card that helps but I’ve had to triage my dental and eye health/glasses for years. I’ve broken 2 teeth in the past year. Had to have one pulled because it couldn’t be fixed. Spent $132 today for a doc to tell me I don’t need a root canal. Now need to get a crown.
As others have pointed out we need like five kinds of head insurance
-- basic physical stuff
-- mental stuff
-- ear stuff
-- eye stuff
-- death stuff
Obamacare grouped some basic levels of the first two together.
That would be wonderful. Dental insurance is largely purchased by people who need it or as a corporate benefit, which means it's expensive and limited. A mandate would be really helpful.

I tried getting ACA dental insurance. It had a flat benefits cap of $1,200 per year, i.e 1 crown + cleanings. Gods forbid I had 2 dental emergencies in a year.
Only worked because I qualified for government subsidies. Adding it up, I paid for my dental care in installments rather than lump sums.
I was just telling someone today that I call them "luxury bones." I had to have my dentist also help with my luxury (jaw) muscles yesterday because medical doctors (or insurance) also won't help with those either. 🤬
I’m pretty sure my dentist’s yacht is named after me, but yeah, getting teeth (and eyes!) to stop being in the Optional Bonus Health category would be great
No kidding. I have a medical issue that causes dental problems. I have spent a small fortune on my teeth even with dental insurance and my medical refuses to cover the issues despite it being a systemic problem.
I recently got a letter that due to my insurance changing, I won't be able go to the Dentist I've seen for 10 years any more, at least not as the same discount level.
So uh, yeah. F insurance companies. Get'em out of here.
There is never a reason for eye care and dental to not be covered by my health insurance. It should not be an extra charge and not even cover basic cleaning.
I have been incredibly lucky that I can get away with a cleaning every 5-10 years, no cavities, no problems. But I know my luck is going to run out soon, because my gums are starting to recede, just as my dad's did.
