I think the original intent was the Galaxy class ships were meant to go on very deep range missions lasting for perhaps decades at a time, hence the soft environs. Of course by the end of the first year this was forgotten.

For me the B-plots let me get to know the characters a bit better; Discovery for example barely got any and half the bridge crew are still ciphers 5 years on. I think, if well done (preferably as mini arcs of their own) they can have value.

Ugh yeah. if I ever make those jokes please know it's nought to do with his ethnicity and everything to do with my contention that Tories in general like to set the house aflame and then swan off to some gilded resort at the first possible chance. I'd say the same for him as I would for Rees-Mogg.
