I'm not going to say Bill English is *unqualified* to do this review, but it seems to me to be a farcical stretching of the word "independent" to describe a review by the immediate former National PM, commissioned by the current National government, as "independent".

Have heard ppl in academic game studies privately express similar views. On the one hand, maybe it's good some literary types, who previously didn't take games seriously, now do. On the other hand it's not really a good set of essays, and "games, but now we take them seriously" is a very dated move.

I love the framework of telling a series of short stories in a single setting with different gameplay genres (golf sim, platformer, turn-based tactics) as well as the satire of ecological and social collapse in a (very lightly fictionalised late capitalist dystopia).

The gameplay of Highwater is my favourite of the series, but the turn-based levels use a more generic track, so there isn't as much space devoted to the charming, cosy, and atmospheric radio station that provides the overall narrative structure and emotional heart of the series.

Enjoyed playing Highwater (2024) over the weekend, a cozy-adjacent turned-based strategy game from Demagog Studio and part of the same setting as their other games Good Club: Wasteland (2018) [now Golf Club: Nostalgia] and The Cub (2024).

There's a lot going on in this bullshit, but I think the single funniest thing is trying to draw attention to a book titled "Terrorism: A Very Short Introduction" as though it's a how-to guide rather than a short scholarly work published by Oxford Press.

I haven't played the fifth edition, so I can't speak to it specifically. PDFs of several older editions are also available elsewhere. Has anyone done scholarly work on medievalisms and the reception of the medieval world in Ars Magica?

Haha, I know _why_ it's white! The thing is, I love cheese sauce! But roux + meat instead of roux + cheese took some getting used to! Funny that brown was the fancy one! That's the "every time I roast" one for me. American-style white gravy is a special "I think I'll make biscuits and gravy" thing!
