I've said it before and I'll say it again: "Doom" is an incredible name for a first-person shooter and "the Doom Slayer" is a horrible, horrible name for a first-person shooter's protagonist

In 2016 it was fun, because it was all part of the demons' mythological-level terror of this force of nature (and because he was defeated by locking him in a small room with no coloured key to get out), and people just didn't ask him for a real name. But good lord Eternal ruined the fun.
Didn’t the demons start calling him that because ripped and teared so many of their guts he became a legendary bogeyman. Demons famously have shit taste, it tracks that they’d give him a shit name
for some reason when Eternal came out they decided to turn Doom into Quake and sure, fine, it was a fun enough game, but it really made me miss Doom 2016 and its no-nonsense approach to modernizing what Doom used to be about
He used to have no name and was colloquially referred to as Doom Guy
Idk why they went and gave him a title, there's really no reason to have him be a real person and not a cardboard insert for the player
Having Doom expand on its world and factions is fine, but it shouldn’t extend to the player character as it conflicts with the idea that he’s just an unknown soldier tearing through demons b/c it’s COOL.
Anything more than background easter eggs or a few quirky animations is too much for him
It works if you call him t h e d o o m s l a y e r like in the skull recordings in hell, similar to the covenant referring to mastah chief as the demon. As an actual name on a "hi, my name is" sticker fuck that
He's still just Doom Guy to me. I'm not a fan of Nu-Doom, and its absurd comic book hero aesthetic is one of the reasons. It's like some teenager's edgy DeviantArt OC: "Doooom Slayurrr!!!"
