So, hey, over on Whatever today I have something important to say about "AI" art and my book covers, and why moving forward it'll be an actual contract point that my book covers have to be human-created.
I don’t care for all your books, but some are on my “recommend to people list”.
That said, you are now on my “artists to recommend list”.
Fuck AI with a digital fragmented crowbar.
Yeah, seeing Adobe's name on the stock image watermark, I'm not at all surprised it turned out to be "AI" generated. No "art" company is more focused on grift and scams than Adobe.
Damn, now I see that I could have also commented on this article here.
Is there a reason why the artists who designed your covers don't get credited in your books?
That might be an effective way to avoid AI covers.
Well done, sir! When I get a portfolio together I may reach out to asfa-art.com for help in entering the sci-fi cover market so thanks for letting me know it exists.
You say "must be created by a human artist", but a human most definitely did "create" this art in a sense; computers don't just decide to create art by themselves. These humans "cheated", but the distinction between what is considered cheating and what is considered original art is getting blurry.
I think it's good that you are publicly doing this, it's important that we continue to have actual artists, & AI works by cleaving to what's most predictable/predicted.
However, I'm certain that some artists will begin using AI as a tool-for backgrounds, maybe-or whole pieces--that'll make it hard.
It has never looked particularly nice to me when I saw it in the Italian listings, compared to the US and UK covers. Thanks for taking steps to avoid AI generated art in the future.
I think I've seen one artist actually seem to use AI to benefit his art, but he was an extreme outlier. He built a model using only his own work, and was using it to refine his stuff in multiple passes. I saw an example once where provided a rough sketch, have the AI do a coloring pass...
I don't think this applies to your specific situation, but as an FYI, it seems like some sites are flagging files as AI erroneously based on the metadata. Might be something to have your team look out for, too: bsky.app/profile/svtw...
I admittedly have no idea how licensing cover art works but it seems especially scummy that you already had essentially this art made by an actual artist and they felt the need to recreate it, worse, with "AI" instead of just paying the original artist.
We all make mistakes, and I commend you for how you owned up to what might not have actually been your fault.
This says volumes about you and your character. I need to pick up a few of your books now.
So this sucks but you handled it really well and I think that your contract changes and policy changes are good.
Nonsense happens but the response speaks volumes positively.
To further muddy the issue, I'm seeing some posts today saying that human-made art is getting erroneously tagged with "made by ai". Dunno if that applies to your situation, but I regardless applaud this inclusion into your contacts.
