A Red-bellied Woodpecker's tongue has multiple barbs facing backward toward the throat. This specialized design helps with dislodging insects in tree crevices. If you look closely, you can see the barbs at the end of this female Red-bellied Woodpecker's tongue.

Red-tailed Hawk nestlings (one has only the top of his/her head visible near the other one's foot.) There are three in the nest, with at least one beginning to take short flights.

The brilliant red waxy tips on Cedar Waxwings wingtips increase in number and size with age. Younger birds will have none to a few waxy tips, while older birds (like this one) will have more. These red droplets help with mate selection as birds with similar numbers will match up with each other.

Semipalmated Sandpipers are cute and small, barely bigger than a sparrow. I was laying down in the sand and this one scooted up quite close on his/her quest to look for insects. These tiny birds will fly thousands of miles to get to their breeding grounds in the arctic tundra - amazing!

Walking down a side alley today we saw these chefs outside a sushi joint with this 100 kilo tuna. They were selling ¥150 beers and doing a "breakdown" demonstration. So we stuck around and watched. Here are the highlights!

A Fun-sized Bittern — actually a "Least Bittern" but who likes to be called "Least"? This is a bird that's rarely seen around here, and this is one of the rare times I've seen one in breeding colors. During breeding season, the lores (the space between the eyes and beak) are pink.

From the beginning, the danger hasn't been Trump. He is constitutionally lazy, ignorant, unambitious and just generally not good at things. The danger is from people supposedly in opposition doing fuck all to stop the rest of his coterie, categorically more evil, ambitious and skilled than him.
