My taxable income was up just under $1000 from 2022 to 2023 and I was charged $700 more in federal taxes and today's letter says my medication deductible has gone up another $50. Still at the poverty level! This is such a fucking racket.

It's absurd and out of the blue and fucking perfect. And it reminded me I need to say fuck it and just have the time of my life in whatever I'm writing, because the audience will be able to feel joy in the work, even if that means sticking a ten-minute musical number in the middle of a horror story.

Preoccupation with darkness in fiction does not mean one's committing dark acts in life, and I think folks are best to avoid that particularly puritanical assumption. It's fair to reconsider what an artist's work seems to ENDORSE, but depiction does not equal endorsement.

LRTs, I admit I got very uncomfortable with folks immediately going to "Well [work] hits in a different light with those allegations/it was obvious he had a problem"--like maybe that's true, I dunno, I haven't read him. And I know racists often have something inherently bigoted in all their books.

None of this is to say art exists in a moral vacuum. Great art does not "cancel out" an artist's immoral acts. It's that the quality and themes of art are not an indicator of a person's morality and can't be used as a guide to guess who is or isn't moral outside of their art.

Similarly, there's no connection between enjoying art and morality. Reading happy, hopepunk work doesn't make you a good person. Enjoying dark, and challenging art doesn't make you a bad person. We are all drawn to create and consume art for many indiscernible and unknown reasons.

It's a very common sentiment! But I do believe it's a skill that can be practiced, and it's normal to feel like it's going against one's programming but eventually that gets a little easier. And the more we ALL share our joy, the more encouraging I think that is for everyone.

Very different! One can't start by putting oneself down in a professional setting. I've another client, too, who will say "I just give up, I don't know if this is even a book, I'm sorry" but we've worked together years and understand one another. But new or experienced, no one should expect MEAN.
