I only know of the Johnny Cash cover of "I'm on Fire", huh!
I know Spingsteen's version of "Fire" is technically a cover since he originally wrote it for Elvis but gave it to Robert Gordon after Elvis' death; the Pointer Sisters' producer gave it to them a yr later
and yeah siouxsie's wheel rules

the Bobs will always be my favorite a cappella group, a new wave quartet w/fun originals & covers. when they did "strawberry fields" live they'd simply turn around in place for the coda
can't find the track online so here's an arrangement they made of an obituary

the Art of Noise chops up samples of all kinds & makes insane new wave/electronica stew out of them. they got Tom Jones to do vocals for a Prince cover. was brilliant. the AoN mix is the one I knew best cause I had that best-of compilation on tape. good driving music

Etta James was an absolute legend, a funk stepper-onner of incredible talent and groove, and her gender-swapped Tom Jones cover makes one lyrical concession ("Baby, take off your mess") but it works, it works so damn much, Etta gives everyone reason to live

"Girls Just Want To Have Fun" was first written & recorded by Robert Hazard, whose male perspective is 1/2 condemnation of girls who won't settle down & 1/2 celebration of them
cyndi lauper took it, gender-swapped it, & turned it into a full-on anthem of empowerment

the Balanescu Quartet put out an EP with nothin but string quartet covers of Kraftwerk songs; for the PBS series "Sessions at West 54th" David Byrne joined them to do vocals and dance for The Model. there's also the funkiest theremin player you've ever seen on hand

Max Raabe turns pop and hip-hop into Berlin cabaret when he's not doing Kurt Weill and other German standards; he does two brilliant Britney Spears covers and a great Tom Jones, but his Salt-n-Pepa turn triumphs

the UO of GB are best known for their cover of Wuthering Heights featuring a big band call-&-response chorus
but their live version of Heroes is just beautiful in its build from gentle harmony to full on power
the audience laughs at first but ends up cheering
