The “when they go low, we go high” approach has pretty clearly been shown to only embolden them further at this point. What we need to do is, as the other skeet said, give the bully a fat lip so that they’re warned off from continuously stealing our lunch money and unilaterally escalating.

AI company: we trained this dog to talk. It doesn’t actually understand language, but it kinda sounds like it’s having a conversation by mimicking the sound of human speech. CEO: awesome, I’ve fired my entire staff, how quickly can it start diagnosing medical disorders

Bronx medical school, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, is now tuition-free thanks to a $1 billion gift from Dr. Ruth Gottesman, a former professor.

One unusual requirement of the gift: she said they can’t change the name of the college to hers.

This is such an eloquent and moving statement that I’m really at a loss for words. The amount of damage done by the Hugo admins is unconscionable. Sam did not have to do this, should not have had her moment tarnished (nor anyone else), but she is taking the stance she feels necessary. Respect.

No - now they can switch to "Well, we just launched" instead. That should get them through the first year. 🙄

Don't know how many have followed the Hugo controversy in China in recent times, but if you have, this is interesting read... (and if you haven't, see my post in reply below this for a link explaining the basics..)

Oh absolutely, on an individual level you need to. I’m also disabled and have had to pick battles as well; I just meant as a matter of principle, Olive Garden should offer gluten-free options that are suitable for people with Celiac at no extra cost, that’s all. Even if it’s unrealistic IRL.

Is it though? Should someone with Celiac have to pay more for a version of an included feature that they can eat?

At some point, "We have to keep Trump on the ballot or there will be violence" becomes, "We have to let Trump be president, or there will be violence," and that is, in fact, the point of the violence.

The great joy of having pets is that they share their lives with us, and we see the world differently through their eyes. The tragedy of having pets is that, eventually, they die. And we live on, irrevocably changed, missing them for the rest of our lives.

If you have ever said you support disabled people this is, very literally, the absolute least you can do. The 19th is the deadline. It takes you five minutes. Abled people time to show up and put your words into action.

This is the best reporting to date about the human trafficking operations behind pig-butchering scams. Like ransomware, this is a thriving, complex organized crime operation and I don't understand why diplomats aren't summoned over this stuff.

It's not just the US that should take seriously the need to prepare for a large spike in the coming weeks. And it's not only a wastewater warning with Pirola; France got hit hard and early by Pirola and is currently getting hammered with hospitalizations.

The efficacy of a cloth or surgical mask vs. an N95 or KN95 when it comes to protecting the wearer is really night and day; the former aren’t even in the same ballpark as the latter when it comes to quality.

Tim's avatar Tim @tewlbox.bsky.social

That’s not true. Masking can be enough all on its own if you do it properly. If you wear a high quality KN95 or N95 mask with a proper fit (not actually hard to do) you can be around people who have respiratory infections and not get anything.

making garbage comments like these under posts celebrating a religious holiday is NOT anti-Zionism. It's antisemitism AND it reinforces the Zionist conflation of Israel with Jewish identity and religion

We can abhor what Hamas has done while still advocating for the rights of Palestinians to safety, freedom, self-determination, and happiness. We can hold nuanced stances. It’s not impossible. But gosh, isn’t a simple slogan easier?

Then agreed. We need, collectively, to be better. We can decry Israel’s actions while still supporting Jewish people and being supportive through their High Holy Days (which aren’t in December anyway).

Like people just should not make litmus tests, and doing so for Jewish people before celebrating Jewish holidays is okay is deeply alarming and disturbing right now among the massive increase in anti-Semitic rhetoric. It’s so fucked.

I talk a lot about the importance of *good* anti-SLAPP laws at both the state and federal level. Daniel, a lawyer who regularly defends victims of SLAPP suits, shows how plaintiffs have figured out a loophole in one state antiSLAPP that let them SLAPP with impunity

Said PC is a fully sentient golem, so souls don’t enter into it; however we’re entering late game and he’s something of a known quantity in this city, so the pact was for “a significant favor to be repair at an unspecified time in the future.” I already have so many fun ideas…

A player pulled that on me the other day! Her PC’s Emperor/Archnemesis Dad had sent a goon squad to arrest him for ducking his summonses — which had been concealed from the rest of the party — and so she ducked into Hell’s local embassy and signed a pact to make the problem go away.
