I really want a source on it that isn’t a site run by TERFs. It’s not that they’re automatically wrong about EVERYTHING, but…well…I admit I have a hard time extending their reporting the benefit of the doubt that I usually would.
One thing I’ve learned from all these scandals is that I really don’t need to jump out and make any statements at the first accusation. There’s nothing lost by waiting 48 hours or so. In fact there’s rarely anything lost by just remaining a passive spectator
Yeah same. Like, even a consensual relationship in the circs described isn't the best look ever, but when the only source is Julie Bindel, I'm raising both eyebrows.
As @belledejour.bsky.social said - if Julie Bindel and Rachel Johnson say the sky is blue.... Walk outside and fucking check.
awww, man, Ursula--I've been a fan of your work since the wombat tarot days.
would you wait to see whether you "believe" survivors--no matter how their story came out--if the allegations were laid against anyone besides Neil?
whether your answer is 'yes' or 'no', here, it's heartbreaking
The timing of everything is suspicious. I don't think its an accident that the police complaint (which is verifiable, I'm guessing) was filed in October and he posted on his blog that he was getting divorced and flew back to the UK and alluded to doing...something, unspecified on Nov 4th.
The New Zealand police corroborated, and I've seen first-person corroboration from a friend of one accuser.
I think this is just a case in which mainstream news didn't cover it because they wanted access to Gaiman, and the people who didn't care about access didn't care for the wrong reasons.
He directly admitted that he initiated a sexual relationship with an employee on her first day of work in a situation where her housing was contingent on her employment.
I agree that’s it’s generally always good to wait for more information and not be hasty but one thing to consider here is that this isn’t really an anti-trans hate activist MO. They don’t just blanketly lie, they have some pretty consistent patterns.
I'm assuming that Tortoise Media is the site in question, right?
Sorry, to ask, but I've looked and don't see anything obviously TERFy on their About Us tab.
What am I missing?
Why are you doing this. It makes sense to say something about the source but stfu after that and live your life as you wait. why are you arguing about it, to the point of suggesting that the victims aren’t real. I mean, fuck. Surely you must know how that will impact your fans who are survivors.
The New Zealand complainant did contact NZ police in 2022 and there's an open investigation. Police have struggled to follow up though because Gaiman left the country immediately after the allegations were made and hasn't returned.
yeah, I’m not thrilled about that
but also even his side of the story is really gross - you hire a young woman 40 years younger than you to be a nanny and you’re starting a sexual relationship with her hours later? not okay
It's faulty reasoning to attack the source without considering the allegations.
At the very least, he's admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with an employee several decades younger than him within hours of her entering his employ. That's gross without any other allegations.
This is definitely a news story where "wait a week" is a reasonable response. Assault allegations tend to have a lot happen in the first few days, and there's no reason for most of the commentariat to make any decisions quickly here.
I have been wondering if the shoe would ever drop on Neil for a long, long time. My former neighbor was his handler when he came to town on tours, & she said he fucked a lot of young groupies.
My unpopular position is that fucking young groupies is not INHERENTLY predatory, but it certainly can be.
There's a bit extra in this one, I think. The fact that a lot of more reputable sources are reporting on it (vs Boris Johnson's sister) is lending it a bit more credibility.
