as a first-gen American, it's been really scary and depressing to see the whiplash from the Trump years when liberals had very strong, positive messaging for immigrants to today where supposed "allies" argue violating international law is a "necessary evil" and whip out polls to say it's all okay.
I've gotten a lot of mileage out of mentally modelling the liberal mindset as the "no take, only throw" meme but "no support existence, only vote". I wish it hasn't worked so consistently, because we're fucking over a lot of people while that's true.
Everything about it is wrong. The democrats worry about polling is down to the fact that they have chosen to accept the right's framing rather than make the moral and economic case of immigration as a good. Chickenshit stuff.
Centrists for some reason (well, we know what it is) do love to try to play the game by the republicans rules, all for a constituency that wasn't relevant in a primary and will likely be swayed back by Trump coming up with a plan to install turrets to simply kill anyone within a mile of the border.
I've been sadly learning over the years that for a lot of people, politics are more about cheering on their team like it's a sporting event than it is about genuinely having certain positions.
Sometimes i feel like 90% of liberal strategy is based on "now! Surely the Republicans will vote for us!"
The other times I remember: no they all have terrible values and are relieved they can stop pretending to
They are reactionaries not progressive. It's sad and makes me angry and afraid.
Just flat out racism and xenophobia being embraced for short term gain. Nobody says shit to me about being a child of immigrants, my dad never even got US citizenship, but it helps to have blue eyes.
Good encapsulation of poltical dynamic my entire life
Republicans want to do something heinous
Dems stop it
Dems decide to win they need to do the heinous thing they stopped
Republicans do something worse when they win
Repeat
This has been a major blackpill moment for me since 2020- I honestly believed that libs were serious about fixing some of the things that had always been fucked up but they only noticed under Trump, but then that all went out the window as soon as the POTUS had the right letter by his name again.
They don't actually believe in anything which is why they don't have any convictions to fight for what they think is right. Centrism is an ideology for cowards because you never have to defend anything unpopular and when things change you can say it was a different time and move on.
It's not okay.
Polls mostly say whatever the pollsters want them to say. Pollsters bundle data points to show what they want to show. They are wrong much of the time and are not corrected for bias. They should be. They aren't. I could craft a poll where a super majority would say it's not okay.
They live in awe and fear of Republican's continued ability to form lasting narratives that put them on defense. To them there is no greater horror than getting yelled at by a bunch of easily duped angry suburbanites who read Facebook all day.
It's fucking evil. I used to get a lot of political poll calls and there wouldn't even be an option for "yes I think immigration is important we need to fix the system so it's easier for people to get legal", it would just be a range from "build a wall" to "I don't care"
It's sucks so much. I was nauseated by how quickly the national conversation just moved on from the camps on the border immediately after the election, and it's continued to get worse and worse.
Not saying I agree with it but Biden is moving right on immigration to court Nikki Haley supporters. He's surveyed the political landscape and decided there's no more to be gained by moving left, so he's going right to get moderates in AZ/GA/MI/NV/PA/WI. Sucks but that's transactional politics
There are no good and bad things, only good and bad people. If bad people do a thing, it's automatically bad. If good people do the exact same thing, it's good. I'm a pragmatic centrist and my brain and morals are both mush.
Donβt try to foist Kristof off on liberals like myself. I for one donβt see him as being on my side in any meaningful way. And his run for governor of his very liberal home state of Oregon (where I live) was a complete debacle. He had zero support here.
