*Not that I mean to set myself up as an up-to-date expert on public health preparedness and response, either. My time working on that was during the first round of concern about H5N1, not long after SARS 1.0. Ancient history, now!

Oh, totally! I wish our response were more driven by genuine public health experts. Lab science and clinical care are amazing, but not the same.
That said, as far as I recall, mucosal vaccines were “the future” when I was studying so I’m glad to hear any insight from people who know more!*

(I realized this is ambiguous. Just to make it clear that I’m not throwing my excellent MPH program under the bus: I meant “class” as in “course,” not “class meeting,” and “lucky” unironically. I was just trying to say I don’t set myself up as the expert @drtwillett.bsky.social is on this topic.)

Me too! (And I’m glad to see your take on it. I was lucky to get one whole class focused on immunology of infectious disease, so it’s great to have an actual expert weigh in. 😊)

Just the phase 1 trial, but hopefully an important step toward an vaccine that prevents #COVID *infection,* and not just severe (acute) disease. If so, not only would it drastically reduce transmission, but it could provide MUCH stronger protection against #LongCOVID.

A lot of ableism isn't deliberate: that makes it more pernicious! A walker is representing being at lower faculty, by your description.
I tweeted this on the other site: "The way walkers are used in media/culture is truly revolting -- & this rep prevents ppl from using what is a useful tool."

Over at the Bad Place, I made a tradition of posting Douglass' "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth of July," and I intend to carry on that tradition here.
Since most versions you read in classes or in textbooks have parts omitted, the link below has the full text of the speech.

It’s a very obscure question but I did some research and it turns out that the president who led us out of the Depression and kicked Hitler’s ass was actually in a wheelchair? Who knew?

However, the CDC continues to go out of its way to stigmatize masks, not listing it in its core prevention strategies for respiratory viruses, and calling it an “additional” prevention strategy instead.

The CDC has finally acknowledged that SARS-CoV-2 is not a typical “winter” respiratory virus, and COVID-19 is a threat that can surge throughout the year.

I didn’t even read it. I’m too tired of people taking the wrong lessons from these kinds of analyses. I just just didn’t have the spare energy to see if this story did the same—especially today.

Not to downplay this, but when I read “the pandemic’s toll was laid bare,” I thought I was going to hear about an updated mortality estimate that includes all the diverse effects of #LongCOVID, not a “try your hand at the math your kids have forgotten” story.

I’m definitely not a Constitutional scholar, but my recollection is that the 22nd Amendment says he can’t be *elected* President for a third term, not that he’d be barred from serving, per se.

One of many hot takes I have from being a complex patient with post covid/long covid is that maybe most long covid clinics are fake constructs. Like I was supposedly "referred to the long covid clinic" & it was just a typical pulmonologist appointment no special diagnosis or triage coordination

This is a microcosm of what state judiciaries have been doing in shredding public health law authority on the state level -- continually ruling that executive action, including under public health and disaster emergency statutes -- are unlawful w/o explicit legislative action that will never come
