Newsletter: Goldman Sachs has called BS on Generative AI, and I believe that it's time that everybody follows suit - generative AI is unreliable, unsustainable, requires an entire rebuild of America's power grid, and is most decidedly not the future.

These were not technologies that no one had heard of or that were not recognized as breakthroughs when they occurred. The inventors of blue LEDs and lithium ion batteries won Nobel prizes! But they never lead to huge investor hype cycles or contemporary recognition of their revolutionary potential

It's been extremely hot here the last few days, and I've been seeing birds sunning themselves! They fan their feathers out to kill mites and parasites by exposing them to sunlight, and if very hot will sit with their beaks open to cool down just like a dog panting. 🪶

What this article leaves out is that if you hand your unlocked phone to a police officer, they can legally search it. Unless companies develop a method that allows you to show officers insurance cards and driver license without unlocking the rest of your phone, don't.

There was lead in EVERY tampon they tested.
There was less lead in organic tampons, but those had higher concentrations of arsenic.
Also fun: It's 2024. This is the first ever study testing metals in tampons. Great. 🙃

People cannot seem to understand--or refuse to understand--that not all disability is static. With many conditions, some days are better than others. That doesn't negate the disability. It doesn't make the shitty days not count anymore.

It's important to note that in France, yes, a fascist majority was prevented, but they still doubled their presence in parliament. The fascists didn't stay home. They went & voted. It's just that enough decent people showed up to beat them back to a significant degree (& make them cry). SHOW UP.

If you steal $1000, you can be sent to prison. When health insurance companies steal $50,000,000,000, they get tax breaks, subsidies and government contracts, while the people they steal from die or go into debt. But keep blaming immigrants and poor people for rising crime.

Life’s tough for a whole lot of people & I try to temper my optimism for the future with the realities many of us face. Yet I still want to say that forming community that uplifts no matter how small does move the needle forward. Joy IS an act of rebellion and is fuel that helps us face adversity.

I love this and I feel this really hard as a writer of, specifically, cosmic horror. What do you DO when you're faced with a foe you can't defeat or understand? You still have choices left in your humanity -- not many, but a few -- and the horror is about exploring what those choices are.
