So not making a moral judgement here, I think it is a *rational* strategy based on where I see the research around the American electorate pointing. Will it work? I dunno, it's not November yet and I'm suspicious of any of my colleagues who think they can predict elections (6/?)

And a lot of that support is motivated by negative partisanship - voting not because you like your party, but because you hate your opponent, and most voters are rational actors in that they don't like to "waste" votes and recognize our first past the post system means that a big party will win (5/?

So you can't win an election by trying to win over the middle anymore. The middle has already made up their mind about who they're going to support. You win an election by turning out the people who were already going to vote for you. (4/?)

Instead, there are lots of people who will self-identify as independent or unaffiliated but will reliably vote for one party over another. Sometimes more reliably so than the registered members of parties in the past! (I'm talking 50s, 60s ish) (3/?)

There's an argument pioneered by Corwin Smidt I find pretty reasonable that posits there are relatively few truly "floating voters" remaining in our political ecosystem - the kind of voting pattern we used to see where someone would vote Republican one election and Democrat another. (2/?)
