roberts essentially ignores the purpose of separation of powers, which was not to create entirely separate spheres of action but to prevent the emergence of unchecked authority. instead, he says, separation of powers *demands* unchecked authority.

The damage this causes across generations (even if the regime is short lived!) is so hard to grasp if you haven’t lived with it. It touches every aspect of life. It makes trust impossible, and without some level of trust and a belief in the possibility of justice, *nothing in society works.*

A few years ago, Jon Lovett floated a theory that media treats Democrats like protagonists - to be challenged, accounted, and forced to be behave in growth-oriented ways - while the GOP are treated like antagonists - immutable, expected to disrupt, thematic obstacles. Thinking about that a lot.

right now, the extent of what democrats can do is hounding and shame, which they should do! biden should condemn the insurrectionist members of the court, durbin and whitehouse should hold hearings and demand that alito and thomas both answer questions before congress. make it a spectacle, basically

You are thinking they "automatically subscribed you" when there is an unsubscribe link, but email marketing is always "maintaining a list of people and sending shit to them on a regular basis" whether there is an unsubscribe link or not. The law just says "you have to provide a way to opt out."

Providing an unsubscribe link is required by law (CAN-SPAM Act), and not providing it means your spam is likely to get filtered out of the inbox automatically, because it lowers your sender reputation score.

I have developed a habitual crouch whenever I sit in a place where people want to see things on the stage/screen in front of me. I have chronic back pain and I do it anyway.

I remember reading Solnit’s piece when it was published and shouting “yes!” And now I’m rereading it and realizing how much, much worse things are now, and how sadly relevant her piece still is.

When I was finally given the right to get my visa I couldn’t get it because I needed to leave the country and come back and the borders were closed due to covid. I then had to apply to extend my tourist visa on the basis of “dude, these are your insane rules and it’s a pandemic, wtf?” Fun times.

As someone who recently immigrated from the US to Canada, I can tell you that even in peace time, with a decent cushion of money and a job and an attorney it was long, difficult, tedious, confusing, frustrating process. People who haven’t tried to immigrate have no idea. I didn’t before doing it.

100% this. There are for example many brilliant engineers who don't rise to the level they otherwise would because English is a god awful language to learn. It's frustrating for them and a loss to their coworkers because their ideas for improvement don't get expressed/empowered.

The First Amendment analysis of whether newspapers should be able to print identifiable details of potential jurors and put them in danger may be complicated. The moral, ethical, and social analysis of whether newspapers SHOULD is not complicated.

Not every movie about nuclear war has to be "Threads" but it should in my opinion consider the topic with the same sobriety that Threads did.

It felt like cotton candy to me, I stopped after one episode. Living with the fear of nuclear war my entire childhood has left me unable to stomach action movies about nuclear war. I feel about these types of movies the way Michael Haneke feels about Schindler's List. They seem...irresponsible.

True! That’s the other part that’s also hard to explain…that it’s not that we decided a given algorithm is safe and that’s that and we dusted our hands off and left for the beach. :)

In my experience explaining things that way, a layperson will say “but what if there’s a trick.” And it’s very hard to explain why the math proves there’s no trick.

If SBF's sentence somehow seems "short," it's only because we use long sentences to an extent other countries simply don't. This CCJ graph on %-of-ppl sentenced* to 10+ yrs comparing US states to foreign countries is striking. No country comes close to us.

That movie is perfect and surprisingly timeless. She's brilliant/neurotic/endearing, the ambiguous relationships, the ethical tension, the perspective on the broadcast industry just when it began its plunge, the believability of all the characters, the honesty. Just a great film!
