You know, that guy. The one that did that thing. Sometimes known as "The Half-Life guy" (but not for the Half-Life games that you're probably thinking of). Ancient gamedev, modern fool.

I am pleased as hell to RE-introduce... DUNGEONS OF FREEPORT, now with its new art style. Post-it notes and legal pads, why, how else do you play ASCII RPGs?

I think that one way or another, the USA is coming to an end. We'll have one or more new things in its place, and some of them will be terrible - and that's probably the best-case scenario.

Interesting point on the asymmetry that ALP conscience votes are "used for one purpose and one purpose only, that being to permit some MPs to vote with the religious right." Wow, that's S ome D amn A symmetry

What irks me is the modern conservative's focus on harm. That they exult in harm to certain others and groups of others - not for any purpose or goal, but simply to cause harm; to hurt people only for the joy of causing suffering, and nothing more. To even harm themselves and their country to do it.

I kinda feel like now that the Supreme Court has declared it legal for a president to straight-up murder people they don't like, it's probably even more important to not elect people who seem extremely inclined to murder people they don't like

Hi, I'm the Democratic Party. 12 years ago I passed a law saying any organization that you ask to stop texting you has to comply. Now every election I found 10 new throwaway PACs and send exactly one text to you from each of them. You text "stop", but my other 9 "organizations" don't have to care.

A lot seems to have happened very suddenly, and despite looking in on bsky numerous times each day, I've got no idea what happened, what happened to aegis, or why various people I followed suddenly disappeared. Is there any kind of a write-up somewhere that covers it?

It isn't solely performative, I think. There's likely consulting fees and whatnot. A whole truckload of taxpayer money moves around during the drafting process, and keeps on moving right up until the final appeal. Unconstitutional bills move a lot of money, win or lose.

(This is not counting protocol and metadata overheads) And that's why network engineers work in bits/sec. Theoretical transmission speeds can be worked out by knowing your wire-protocols and your bit-rate, so working in bits/sec is usual for networks, CDs, DVDs, tapes, and such.

Most networks use bytes as the basic unit. A few use words. If you're doing asynchronous transmission, then it's usually two bits added per byte or per word. If you're doing synchronous comms, you generally don't add them in.

A byte is the smallest unit that a CPU can fetch from memory (usually 8 bits, but not on every architecture). A word is generally the size of a register, or the largest (frequently 32 or 64, but there are odd sizes as well). And then things get funky when you start transmitting over networks.

For most networks it's 10 bits to send or receive one byte. But most folks don't actually grasp what a byte is (or a megabyte, for that matter) anyway, so I'm not certain that the other units are actually more helpful.

Over a sufficiently long period, I think all social media sites are transitory way-stations. That's been my experience thus far, anyway. They come and go, and we jump between them for our own reasons, or we stick to them until they die, for our own reasons. After 40 years I'm getting used to that.

You'll note that the curriculum of the day made no distinction between using the word average to describe either the median or the mean (or, actually, the mode). A fact which annoys me to this day. It makes me grouchy pretty much any time the word average comes up.

Dancer (The)'s avatar Dancer (The) @dancerv.bsky.social

Back when we first got taught averages in school, we got taught to always use a median for an average instead of a mean for an average, if it was possible - we didn't have ready access to computation at the time, so medians weren't commonly used then.
