Fondly remembering the rollout of Twitter's paid bluechecks, when Elon's Renfields insisted that anyone who wanted to build an audience - media, artists - would HAVE to buy one. How could they not?
Eight months later all the bluechecks you see are tryhard losers.
From what I understand, Twitter Blue had some useful features for big accounts, businesses, etc, and paying for it might have made sense for some users, but Elon turned it into a sign of loyalty to him and the whole thing acquired a stink.
The blue checks are almost exclusively (1) the “line goes up” crowd who are Elon cheerleaders, or (2) accounts that post “who’s at fault?” along with viral video clips stolen from TikTok for monetization
that was bad enough, but boosting them to the top was an almost legendarily awful decision. all those reactionary orcs hidden behind “Show more replies” suddenly were the first replies you saw
The one that snuck up on me (though it shouldn't have) was terfs. I saw like 5 with the blue check and went, "wait, why are terfs chasing a big easy validation button?" then there was a beat and I went, "oh right. That."
It's a little silly to think about posting as a marketplace. But look at the followers accounts have picked up here by being Good at Posting, then look at the Elon reply guys over there who pay $8/m and still have 58 followers. One of the funniest miscalculations I've ever seen.
Definitely not a try herd but I have a blue check cuz I run a legal dispensary. The blue check definitely helps out I will tell you that it's worth it if your making money 🤷♀️
Loling at the logic that one new customer a decade would somehow make up for $960 spent on the checkmark. Does he think artists are selling used cars or something?
I miss the original Twitter Blue. $2/mo. got you the ability to edit, and to read threads in a linear fashion. It was a steal, and I can’t believe they thought this was the better path (actually I can, but…).
