UK comrades: hold your fucking noses and vote to stop this shit, wipe the Tories from the face of the earth, then rack up to fight the Labour Party dawn to dusk for every term they serve

Yep. Its this difficult for me, a highly educated person with relatively okay disability level, stable internet and housing, and loving family to support me, so anyone with less than that? Absolute impossible nightmare.

This means, depending on what amounts we earn when, and how our "basis period" falls in the month, we may now have a month where we get no income and no UC at all, and have to do monthly accounts reporting and claim calculations to achieve that. This is, i believe, some bullshit. #UniversalCredit

So as self employed writers we have bad months (no income) and good months (wow they finally paid!) which means the great months cause the following month to be zero UC and zero help with Health stuff, and the bad months mean the following month we get full UC and help with health.

The admin to claim any help with anything is purposefully confusing. I rang the tax credit exemption helpline. She said id possibly be eligible, and shed send me an email. Great! Email said "find out if you are eligible" hit link, and theres five y/n questions, then "depends on prev months income"

Monday spent getting papers together for interview to move from tax credits to universal credit. Tuesday two hour UC interview, then submit figures etc, yesterday sorting to do accounts/tax return, today? Free dentist/prescriptions depend on monthly accounts, instead of yearly HC2 certificate.

Voted for the lesser evil. Literally all any of us can do. If you don't do it, you get the greater evil and you may as well have voted for them. A shit system but, if you don't vote at all, you just make it easier for the the very worst to get elected.

Alien (1979): Early art by Jean "Moebius" Giraud
One of the legacies of Alejandro Jodorowsky's Dune, cancelled in the mid-1970s, is that Dan O'Bannon had met Moebius, H.R. Giger and Chris Foss on that project, and was able to recommend them to Ridley Scott a few years later.

Lots of great stuff in this, but this struck me as fundamental: "Silicon Valley will continually fail to innovate at scale until it learns to build real things again — things that people use because the things in question actually do something."

Most articles where the author complains about Covid safety boil down to "I love thinking of myself as a compassionate person and the constant reminders that I am selfish are stressful."

I wrote about @npr.org ‘s decision to frame disabled people's ongoing exclusion from all public spaces as an annoyance to be navigated by individuals, rather than a massive civil rights violation to be challenged by the collective.

Thus March 12, 2020 - The Dow falls 10%, its worst day in 33 years. There is bedlam at unprepared airports as Americans, sick and well, flood home to beat the travel ban, many waiting for hours packed in confined spaces. Also, it turns out no one in DC warned European leaders about any of this.

In Bologna there is a memorial to all of the antifascist partizan fighters of WWII and it is so incredibly moving and humbling. At times like this these heroes are more important to remember than ever.

This is true. There isn’t even anyone at Marvel or DC who can blacklist you from the industry.
If a small publisher owes you money and aren’t paying, though, the last thing they want you to do is tell everyone. You have more power over them than they do over you.

Daughter tells me she heard today that if you wear a band T-shirt (especially as a young woman) and a man says to you “name five of their songs”, the correct response is “name five women who trust you”, so I pass this on in case any of you need it

I'll have more to say about it, later, but for now I'll just say that @jomc.bsky.social's 'Wrong Way' is not only a solid examination of the shams of tech solutionism, but also a tightly atmospheric and appropriately claustrophobic apocalyptic character piece, resonant with Kafka, Ballard, & DeLillo
