I really enjoyed @achristiemiller.bsky.social ‘s
book To the City. It seamlessly weaves history, contemporary politics and social currents with a healthy dose of sadness for my beloved Istanbul.

I am told that if a few more people come there may be space to fit them in (it's free), so do let me know if you are in Norwich and interested in attending.

My upcoming talk on 'To the City' at The Book Hive Norwich is proving so popular that tickets have SOLD OUT two weeks before the event. I told them to hire out Norwich City's stadium, but would they listen? www.thebookhive.co.uk/event/to-the...

Fishing is central to Turkey’s Black Sea culture and economy, but the combined effects of large construction projects, climate change and overfishing are threatening the industry.

Really enjoyed this interview with Alex, and the discussion of Turkey, as well as the problem of "covering" a country you're not from

Another mining disaster in Turkey. Nine missing after a huge landslide at a controversial international gold mine (one of largest in Turkey) that activists had warned was a disaster waiting to happen. Now a bunch of cyanide may be flowing into the Euphrates.

A massive accident in a goldmine in Turkey. Or perhaps not an accident but negligence as the mine was briefly closed in 2022 for leaking tons of cyanide into the Euphrates. 8 miners are missing and at least 1000 hectares destroyed by the toxic landslide.

Maybe if Europe had more old-timers in charge our economies would be growing like the US?

But don't get me wrong, people here are still some of the warmest, most hospitable in Anatolia (and the food is still 🔥).

In the very center (köprübaşı), by the Atatürk statue, and going up Atatürk and Cumhuriyet avenues, virtually everything is either rubble (torn down) or heavily damaged. The historical old city is full of skeletal remains of undemolished buildings. To me that's even more haunting.

People are deeply psychologically traumatized. When I ask about the quake, people often start to cry almost immediately, but the tears quickly turn to some of the rawest rage I've ever seen, directed at the government.

It's shocking to me, and everyone who lives here, how much damage is still left unrepaired. Every single person I've spoken to *without exception* believes it's because the government hates Hatay because it's largely Alevi and sways heavily opposition.

Apologies for spending more time on the other site the last few days, but I made the trip to Antakya, my first time to Turkey's earthquake zone. It's as apocalyptic as everyone says. It looks like a city one month after a cataclysmic earthquake rather than one year.

Growing up as a kid, I listened to a lot of jazz, and I still remember the first time I heard someone say ‘jazz is bad’ just being completely gobsmacked.

I was teasing, but it’s an interesting topic. As well as jazz I also love country music. When I come across country haters, I just think ‘yeah, fine, it’s not for everyone’, but with jazz I do feel a kind of instinctive horror at people not liking it. Not sure why that is.

I wouldn’t try to convert jazz haters any more than I would bother to argue with creationists or flat earthers.

It’s such a weird coincidence that Cummings has fallen out with every boss he’s ever had and gotten himself fired just after he’s finished the easier “burn stuff down” phase of his Brilliant Plan, and just before the more tricky “build something better” phase has to kick in.
