I think a lot of people replace a true idea with a nearby but entirely false idea when discussing positive social media impact:
(True) There are a variety of problems that cannot be solved by a lot of people online agreeing it's a problem.
(False) Social media can't really change anything important.
Hey, so.
I understand that this is anecdotal and not research, but.
It is WILD how useless social media has become for promo. It's a fucking disgrace, really.
Life’s tough for a whole lot of people & I try to temper my optimism for the future with the realities many of us face.
Yet I still want to say that forming community that uplifts no matter how small does move the needle forward. Joy IS an act of rebellion and is fuel that helps us face adversity.
Income inequality mentioned once. Near record corporate profits never mentioned. Who is gaining from high interest rates and debt restructuring? Not a peep. How voters are manipulated to blame it all on migrants and protestors. Nada.
lol should just be because OVO's logo is an owl (I think because the literal letters OVO look like an owl's face?)
So the owl is a stand-in for Drake, with KDot beating him up as a piñata and keeping him in a cage. Cage could probably be a couple things and is the most open-ended
Despite the abolition of #slavery, laws from that era persist in the US legal system – and courts are still citing precedents involving those laws. A law professor calls for these historical roots to be acknowledged in citations to confront and understand the legacy
Depends on user expectations, but even if not shown I think those metrics are important to craft an engaging feed.
A pure chronological algorithm with hidden likes, reposts, follows(?) would make people use social media less.
In which case, you may as well do one of those "offline social" apps
"While I appreciate that, I don't think it would be appropriate" - easy
People in positions of authority set these boundaries on a daily basis
I do it on here! "Thanks for asking me to do X, respectfully I will not due to my role in the network"
Telling well-meaning people "no" is basic leadership
There was an even bigger difference in the comments received. All on Threads and all but one here were positive, constructive, or neutral (one person was just being a jerk, not a troll). Only 18% on X were positive or neutral. The rest were negative, many highly so.
A job I was looking forward to just fell through because I requested a very basic “please don’t feed my work into the AI garbage chute pls” clause in the contract
That was apparently against company policy and non-negotiable
If anyone needs a book cover I have an opening in my schedule
Isn't it interesting that they're trying to frame themselves as initiating *that* war instead of the Civil War? Wannabe Confederates still don't like being called what they are. Probably because it reminds them they lost the first time.
“So she would have the artist turn his lyrics over to the government prior to putting out or promoting any songs he planned to use them in, and at that point if they are deemed to be “inconsistent with the goals of rehabilitation”, prosecutors could ask to modify Dorsey’s supervised release terms.”
There’s a whole paper that I’m waiting to write about the social and cultural dynamics of PFPs and the ways they signal different things to users on social media platforms.
Google doesn't think any language model is too large to train, regardless of the cost to the environment.
But they do think this 240 MB CSV is too large to import into Sheets; It's 2024 and I should be able to upload and modify 2TB CSVs in milliseconds.
reading @rudyfraser.com's post and one part had me chuckle blog.rudyfraser.com/blob-post/ and I heard Obadiah Stone's voice in my head: "TONY STARK BUILT IN A CAVE! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!"
Most *white* Americans.
There is no country on earth that imprisons more of its population than the US. Prisoners disproportionately Black.
The US leads the world in child executions. Not a typo. Disproportionately Black.
Life expectancy for US Black folk lower than for Uighur Chinese. Not a typo
Even if you have a cute little garden you won't produce enough to live or feed a family in a societal collapse. You will always need other people. You will have to work your ass off every day and fight men at the same time. Y'all don't put laundry away for days.
This blog post now includes replies directly from Bluesky. This is thanks to the incredible work of @aendra.com who put this together overnight after I was having issues following the bluesky core team's examples.
I am now inventing a bsky mvp and awarding it to hir
Yeah only for signups unfortunately
I can’t attribute it to just the Blacksky pack but checking counts it seems like most folks in the pack got ~270 new followers on average from being in the pack
