Okay, folks. I’ve been asked by a lot of friends who aren’t following the AI discourse to sort of clarify what the main camps are arguing, how they approach the issues, etc. As a thoughtful observer, I’m happy to provide this orienting service. No questions or comments, please. Hope it helps!

It's time to revisit the idea of expanding the Supreme Court, which means it's time to dismiss the misunderstandings about FDR's "Court-packing controversy."

The GOP push to destabilize the 2024 election has already begun, with lawsuits filed in a host of states around familiar Trump talking points: mail-in ballots, supposed voter-registration fraud, etc. “This is how you build a story that enables political interference in the post-election process." 🎁

The Northwestern lawsuit is an example of the White gaze in action: “White gaze is the operational norm of White space wherein Black people are scrutinized through the lens of Whiteness, resulting in their exclusion, subordination, and objectification.”

this is the only decent coverage I have seen that actually calls out the racism and misogyny at the core of assuming that any hiring decision that doesn't involve making an offer to a cis white guy is sus. abovethelaw.com/2024/07/nort...

right. NYT leadership knows they operate in a moderate/liberal bubble, and after 2016 they decided that the only way to adjust for this is to always assume that reactionary thought is more popular than it seems to be

This is also a nice reminder that when conservatives say, "Judeo-Christian" they mean "Christian," because you know nobody at Project 2025, including the person who wrote "Judeo-Christian" below, means anything but Sunday when they talk about deciding what people can & should do on the Sabbath.

I have occasionally heard colleagues assert that if the MOE of the lead includes 0, the race is actually tied. When I object they get the same expression that you get when you hold your phone to your dog's ear.

Again the best to prevent fascism is a robust social safety net, strong wages and active government efforts to help the poor. Neoliberalism and austerity carve away at this, leaving fascism able to grow.

This (which came to me via @rhiggitt.bsky.social) is an absolutely *superb* longish read, in which the long brown envelope of truth lands on the doormat of generative AI. I want to sample the best bits and mix it up with Yello’s Oh Yeah and use it as my entry music.

A point I will reskeet every time someone makes it: You're not just voting for one person for president. You're voting for a whole team with that person as the face of it. Running the country isn't a one-person job. Look at who's on each team, and who they're likely to have in future on each team.

It's been very interesting to see English language news tear up all their planned "far right now rules France, here's how progressives fucked up" stories and hurriedly write "no bloc has a majority, here's why that's bad for progressives" stories.

I remember when Bill Murray was on SNL he'd make Oscar predictions, and IIRC he batted around 1.000. Stephen Colbert swept the table the one year I saw him do it too. As insiders, they had a sense of where the industry was leaning.

Dem weirdos dreaming up tournament-style solutions to Joe Biden being the nominee and Catturd-grade reactionary types crying about cheating in the French election have one crucial thing in common, which is that they transparently lack the emotional maturity and patience required to be sports fans.
