Central Park went car-free six years ago yesterday. People said it would never happen. People said it would never be a success. Now, it's impossible to imagine Central Park any other way. (Congestion pricing would follow a similar course, FYI)

Also, many speed cameras programs in various cities like NYC and DC don't issue tickets unless you are going more than 10 mph over the posted limit. It is trivially easy to avoid getting dinged for going that fast!

I am halfway willing to bet that if we could somehow know the real score, we would learn that Spitzer committed fewer sex crimes than any governor since, oh, I don't know, Al Smith?

Prepping for a quick episode on the latest congestion pricing news and this bit from Governor Hochul's announcement is enraging. 99% of the people Hochul is talking about here — "teachers, first responders, small business workers, bodega owners — DO NOT DRIVE INTO MANHATTAN.

My sister almost got hit by a car in Bushwick some years back that spend through an intersection and jumped the curb. She had to leap out of the way and felt it graze her leg. The thing she remembers the fireman who showed up saying was “Thank god you weren’t looking at your phone”

A corollary: Nearly every person who is against congestion pricing. Whatever they say their reasons are, it all boils down to "How dare you charge me for something I'm used to getting for free?"

This is actually a decent analogy because the drivers have all the power and the numbers and sometimes just straight up murder them but still whine about how they’re the victims

here is a literal sentence from an email i got in response to my newsletter on pedestrian deaths. "I do want to see the media do some research and not assume that all victims had nothing to do with their own untimely and unnecessary death."

I think one of the worst quirks of online spaces is the idea that if someone doesn't post about something, they don't care about it. It encourages performative posting often makes things worse. I care a lot. I just don't want to add another poorly-informed voice. I'm reading & thinking.

The first time I saw a Birkat HaMazon with a ya'ale-veyavo that included "Yom HaKipurim HaZe" for those who ate on Yom Kippur, I was just so moved and impressed that not only are folks obliged to eat in certain circumstances, but that there is built-in liturgy for this holiness. Days of Awe.

There are some exceptions, but it's notable that the mayors who are doing the most to take back space from cars, create more people-centric public space and fight climate change with physical changes to their cities are women.
