I'll make more comics. I pulled all the Beasts of Burden material for the next arc, which I hoped to have written before things got ridiculous. A lot got done. But I'm a slow writer and none of it pays NOW, so: pushing art sales, working on late commissions, selling books, making Patreon posts. (4)

Just frustration! I want to make comics! But I have a ton of catching up to do on commissions /commitments/art/bk sales (and doctors). It's a bummer, but I'm grateful I'm able to doggy-paddle all these years thx to readers, customers, supporters and patrons. Not everyone has that going for them (3)

Didn't help that I've had issues w/my drawing hand/arm that slowed me down (or took me out completely when it got really bad, thank goodness for the steroid shot). I'm also the sole provider more-or-less since Sarah's cancer surgery and recovery. (This isn't a plea for help or a pity party, btw) (2)

Asked in an interview if I had any upcoming new projects to promote. It always hurts to say, "no". I haven't been making new comics bc comics takes time and time is money and every month is an emergency. Needing money NOW means doing what it takes to make money NOW. Not next month, or longer. (1)

Ugh Just explained to someone today I'm in emergency mode and self care is 4th behind 3 things I have no choice but to put ahead of me to survive. I see a way out, but it seems no matter how hard I work, it's always just at the horizon, never closer.

I could've written this thread anytime in the last 15 years. Perpetual emergency mode is a nightmare, esp when your family's survival depends on your own physical/mental health staying solid enough to do creative work for freelance comics wages are stuck in the 90s while the cost of living ain't.

The reason we hear so much meritocracy propaganda is that it's the only socially acceptable origin story for the people it happend to work out for, could stay in the game longer thanks to generational wealth, or are just pretending to have "made it." You can't grind your way to a just society.

and I think it's easier for ppl to be snarky and swap bad-faith takes to deflect from the pretty grim reality that spreading covid by choosing not to mask when you have the resources to do so directly harms other people. it should not be a radical thing to urge people *not* to do that.

sometimes I do feel despair about how the accepted viewpoint of so many people I once trusted is now indistinguishable from the conservative takes we all decried early pandemic of "well, high risk people are going to die anyways" and "disabled people should just stay home then."
