Our last day in the US and I FINALLY SAW A CYBERTRUCK! It’s so bad! How do they see out the rear window!? How can something so expensive look so cheap? It’s like a Balenciaga!

Ha! I mean yes, but also, RI is shockingly regional for such a teeny state. And the salient point is that my parents were living in Warwick, which is a big strip mall where the only greenery is poison ivy. But my casual acceptance of this regionality must mean I finally like it 😂😂😂

We also managed to get Covid boosters in the local community health center in the end. They wondered why we weren’t waiting for the updated one, but when they learned we don’t have access to the vax at all, they not only gave it to us, they refused to charge us.

I realize a lot of people would be horrified to have someone stop by unannounced, but I love it! Stop by and say hi! Hang out! My neighbors in Stockholm are mostly very nice and friendly, but I really miss the culture of *having the chats.* Josephine was in her element, too.

I happened to ask if she knew how to help my folks access home help, and it turns out the people who bought their old house run an org. We also met a very fun family with a kid Josephine’s age, and really feel like we formed a friendship. It’s so hard to leave, but happy they’re in a community now.

She is super nice and very funny, and was like, ok, how do we get you to move here so we can hang out!? That’s the kind if thing *I* say!!! And this morning i met some good dogs while out running, got chatting to the owners, and one is the state rep for the area, super lovely person and her husband.

I pushed my folks to move back to southern RI, where they lived for 25 years (longer than they lived in Boston!) bc their friends are there and they’re getting old and need support and community. But I underestimated how much I’d like it; too! This morning a neighbor stopped in just to say hi!

Google’s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoft’s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.

Big oof. I mean the guy deserves respect for what he did, but I do remember that he also came with some problematic views. I assumed/hoped those were because he was really young….but now i think maybe not.

We tried calling and we could only find 5 and up, and we had trouble getting them to agree to even vaccinate us last year, but thank you! Will try again. So appreciate it! Do you remember which ones? We’re in SK!

Pls repost the skeet below (not this repost)! And don’t make “welcome to the US” comments because it’s rude and unsympathetic when we live in a country that literally doesn’t allow anyone to have it

Ok, getting desperate! Looking for Covid shots in RI or eastern MA. The CDC website is wrong (we tried and nobody they say has it actually does). We are uninsured, so need a low-cost place and my kid is 4. Pls direct links only! Currently crying in a Walmart parking lot in fucking Cranston.

As someone who has had to self-deport from a country I called home, the only people who tried to stop it were other migrants who had access to things like letters of support. Even now, as a citizen, I’m still seen as a migrant first and rarely a member of society. It’s easier but still hard.

This thread describes 23 years of my life as a non-citizen immigrant. So many people, even those who saw me as a friend, showed me they didn’t see me as part of society when it came to politics. As if we didn’t live under the same system where they had a voice and a vote and I didn’t. It was hard.

Remember how the "retail theft crime wave" disappeared as soon as companies had to do their annual reports? That's because it's illegal to lie to shareholders.

Omg we went to a Newport Gulls baseball game, the New England Collegiate League. It was the best fun! Cost 5 bucks a head and was extremely entertaining, in a 100-year-old stadium. It was also Mascot Night, so my kid got to meet a bunch of New England sports mascots.

My guess would be yes, since most of the rich people are old money, and they’re not the cybertruck types. I hope someone throws a Del’s at it. But mostly, I hope I get to see it.

Just marveling at the fact that dozens of news outlets were breathlessly doing stenography for this company, which doesn’t seem to even have a website, so they were reporting on a press release and an instagram video. How can anyone take this seriously????

We have been in the US for one day, and my kid has already made two friends. I’m pretty friendly myself, but I’ve got nothing on this kid and her charisma. It’s also really sweet because she doesn’t use a lot of English (her “playing” language is mostly Swedish) so she is working mostly off vibes.

And we know that construction waste is the biggest contributor to landfills, so even if some of it is recyclable and they’re designed to be removed without trace, they’re still massively destructive

I’ll never forget something you pointed out at a CHAT prob 20 years ago, during the property boom, about how developers were knocking down things like old mills to build condos that they’d name “the old mill.” And we know what has happened since. But at least some of that TRIED to be housing!

Yup, and an empty data center doesn’t have a lot of uses that don’t rely on warehouse or fulfillment needs that might also decline if the chip crash takes down other things (which it could). And they’re eyesores!

I don’t do data center studies but I still touch on this work because it’s related. When the cable industry crashed, it all went down in a matter of weeks. But the cables that were already in service were mostly ok, just underused. Not hulking windowless behemoths where your dog used to play.

Yes, a big empty building can be removed, but it depends how far along it is in its construction. It takes a long time to return land to its pre-construction state, and a lot of the land being used by data centers wasn’t even green field. It’s near or in communities. Or was a community

I’ve been reading and writing a bit about the subsea cable crash in the early 2000s for my PhD, and the big difference with the coming AI-driven data center crash is that cables have a tiny footprint on land and at sea. Unused capacity made little impact. A big empty data center is different.

It’s important for The Onion to have a writers room with new and weird ideas, and it’s important to maintain a pipeline of great comedy writers for the world in general.

It's a good job. Please apply.
