Will it have all the information the government already has on me pre-filled? It always seemed stupid to me that I fill in a bunch of boxes by hand, then the IRS points out which ones were typos. IRS should send me the forms pre-filled and I'll tell them which ones THEY got wrong! SMH

Some clarifications, now that the press release is out:

—IRS apparently can't force states to participate, but they'll work with every state that's interested
—Yes, IRS plans to expand the software to include "most common tax situations"

good. turbo tax got sued actually. i know because my friend got money back from them. they charged people to file once, when there was to be no charge.

I used it this year! Really easy, though I'd have put in a lot of extra effort anyway just to spite the parasitic Intuit/Turbotax. The only annoyance was that it doesn't cover state returns

DK has a national tax system where you log in with yr national digital ID and deal with stuff, and get instant online feedback as to the results of yr input. Brilliant for small biz, you can change stuff on the fly

The Private tax lobbyist quotes are ridiculous. If they do a better job "optimising" your taxes, they, as any capitalistic market advocate would say, will be more competitive and have more clients than the IRS one. Unless they're lying and want a captive market.

Note that this IRS program only covers federal returns.

There are also state-by-state efforts to integrate free online filing of state taxes with IRS Direct File. For example, this tool covers NY and AZ: www.fileyourstatetaxes.org (It is limited to simpler returns, just like IRS Direct File.)
