"we never used to have all these women in their 30s suddenly getting diagnosed with ADHD"
listen, I wouldn't have even noticed I have ADHD if I lived in an era where my doctor could ask if I want to lose 5lbs and then hand me enough amphetamines to see the face of God

Absolutely. Satire is such an important part of UK political culture but when it loses its teeth it's dangerous. It should be scary for those in power, not cosy. Or another term I'd use is "normalised deviance" - everyone collectively ignores the rot till it's no longer treatable.

Yes, but it's not even exclusive to that social class. It's as you say, a way of treating everything as a game where you make the most serious matters of state into trivialities that you can extract advantage from. It's tawdry.

No, it's gross, and it's a reflection of the way running the nation has been treated.

One of those ones where I'm caught between standing my ground and saying "Can you just imagine I'm a man and freshen up my fade anyway?" and just walking off to spend my money elsewhere if I can find somewhere.

Turns out the Inverness of 2024 is still a place where alongside the gay pride parade, Station Barbers will still refuse to cut my short hair because they "don't do ladies on a Saturday only gents".

Think I'm going to launch a combination microbrewery, bulk waste collection and roadside assistance company. I'll call it a Hop, Skip and a Jump.

The Royal Family should be subscription only. Those who want to follow their wacky antics and family dramas can pay the hefty bill for it all. The rest of us get to live in blissful ignorance of the national soap opera and maybe those taxes can be used for something useful.

I made this Pride flag using only NASA images and our team thought it would be cool to share on social (I work on the NASA heliophysics communications team), but it's getting all sorts of hate on the bird app and Fbook. Thought y'all might be more appreciative of it here. ☺️🏳️🌈💖

there are frequent reminders that palestinian lives just don’t count in the west, but an operation that killed 200+ to save 4 hostages being celebrated like it’s a success is a visceral one

35-50yos now have brought back grandma names for our babies. Ruby, Edith, Olive etc. Are we prepared for the next generation of parents to name babies after people who are ~60-70 now? Nurseries full of Dianes, Patricias and Stans. I'm not sure I'm ready.

There’s some strange stuff out there (some of which reads like half-remembered SFF - the bit about using ULEZ cameras to activate bioweapons in people’s bodies is slightly reminiscent of Stross’s SCORPION STARE cameras, despite the fact that his politics are very definitely not alt-right populism)

Minor gripe about the NYT Spelling Bee puzzle, which I've become hooked on. I can understand not having geography words because where do you draw the line on towns, rivers etc. So why allow plant and bird names? Some really obscure words coming up! At least allow countries if you do that?
