I want more folks to know about libro.fm as an alternative to Audible or Spotify or other shady corps.
It’s 100% employee-owned and works like Audible, except your credits support an indie bookstore of your choosing instead of Amazon.

See. Why can’t I have good dreams like this? I dreamed I went to the fridge to get an apple. I couldn’t work out why I was holding two apples when I only wanted one.

On a neurodiversity book binge during the summer. Especially on female neurodiversity, and the different expectations/challenges brought into social interactions. What are your favorite picks? (I did read neurotribes, a divergent mind, aspergirls, and a ton of [auto]biographies)

(Thread) Things spotted on market day in a small city Aotearoa New Zealand: A teenager in a hoodie and tracksuit pants, holding a head of broccoli like a bunch of flowers out to his mum saying "Happy birthday". She clutches her chest in mock surprise before breaking into laughter. (1)

Ok. I was just wondering who would get called if someone found him and took him to the vet or to the RSPCA and had his microchipped read. (Hopefully not your dad)

Let me know. It makes intuitive sense to me because of the link between Autism and 'stretchiness' (EDS genes, regardless of EDS diagnosis). That same 'stretchiness' might also explain my endometriosis and astigmatism. It was a neuro physiotherapist who clarified that link for me.

I should also add: I have now had just two evenings taking Gaviscon (the most Autistic-unfriendly fucking concoction on earth) and turns out my reflux was actually not very 'silent', as I thought. I just hadn't *noticed* it until I drank the Gaviscon and was immediately relieved.

I should stop being surprised whenever I do this after getting diagnosed with literally everything I've so far been diagnosed with. I haven't even clicked on that link--it just makes sense.

I have wondered how much my asexuality affects what I do and don’t find funny. I am con sisterly across contests told I am “quirky”. So I do know what you mean about humour being specific. I suspect what I’d find funny would be unrelatable to many allos. (Which is partly why I asked.)

The first episode, at least, has one of the women speaking in her own voice. Her story is consistent, coherent, and credible, and based on her words *alone* I believe her. I transcribed it because I wanted her story to be more accessible. drive.google.com/file/d/1Ql2b...

The biggest threat right now is someone else finds him and starts feeding him. My mother used to work for the SPCA and it’s a big problem. Cars always look so darn hungry. Is he microchipped?

At teachers college I was sent on a special extra course to learn how to project my voice and do body language. Turns out I was excellent at acting. Instantly became a high masker. Until I burnt out after four and a bit years.

My guess: publishers would become suddenly very interested if a big name celebrity came out very vocally as aspec. (Here’s hoping when that happens it’s not some straight white guy credibly accused of sexual assault.)

Can you think of a really funny asexual book? What’s the most laugh out loud aspec book you’ve read? I think there’s much potential for aspec comedy, in the right hands.

Hell yes. I read some absolute shit I tell you. My father (also Autistic) had a book on the art of Chinese face reading (phrenology, basically). Fortunately I did even then recognise these books were full of it. Interesting to reflect on how much I was reflecting and masking though.

I suspect aces have a separate hurdle: Trans gender and Autism are seen as a “something” whereas apecs are seen as a “nothing”

A “breakout book” is hard for me to define. Publishers probably have a definition of what that means. The trans equivalent in my head was Detransition, Baby bc non-trans readers were picking it up. Notably, Peter’s dedicated it to divorced women (a much larger demographic).

I taught at a 60% Maori Pasifika high school so I get this completely. (Didn’t realise I was Autistic at the time) I did learn how very Western this expectation is.

As an Autistic asexual, if we’ve ever had an extended moment of eye contact, for me it was more intense than sex.
I know exactly how creepy that sounds.
Now imagine how creeped out *I* am that eye contact in Western countries is a marker of trustworthiness, respect and politeness.

With Autism we got The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. I look to YAL to predict where adult lit follows (eg The Lovely Bones kicked off a dead narrator trend which started in YAL). Do you think eg Alice Oseman might do similar for aces?

Do you think the As will get spotlighted by mainstream publishing? Listening to Torrey Peters talk about how surprised she was that Detransition, Baby took off (Caitlin Jenner coming out sparked public interest/prurience) has made me wonder if aces will ever be of genuine interest to allos.

Ok I have a question. Do you look back to your childhood reading/TV and headcanon/see aspec rep in there anywhere? (Many allos would probably say all kidlit is asexual by definition, but I’d disagree with that. Heteronormativity pervades kidlit.)

Reading all these 4 July posts I’m very glad fireworks is banned where I live. Not that it stops everyone but last time kids lit crackers round here they set the grass on fire. Our neighbour noticed and put it out. Can’t remember if i thanked him properly for that now I think about it

I am actually very used to this. This nurse did not know my son is Autistic. But I’ve had 16 years of parenting an AuDHD kid and trying to get him through the educational system, and judgement from all quarters for accommodating his needs, so this shit is not new to me (my own experiences aside)

The paediatrician runs her business like that. Partly to do with the fact she herself is in cancer remission no doubt. The gender doctor also great. But no one else. (And I’ve unfortunately seen many doctors this past year.)
