Here is a short analysis that focuses on what Project 2025 would mean for student borrowers and debt. It’s based on the concrete aspects of the P2025 proposal. Things get worse if you read between the lines.

If we're taking about court-packing again, here's my favorite detail from the 1937 controversy: The SCOTUS justices, learning of FDR's scheme at the same time as everybody else, were handed copies *during oral arguments*. Imagine being the lawyer arguing in front of those preoccupied justices!

It took 50 years for the Dept of Labor to update its federal standard to better protect coal miners from the deadly silica dust that’s driving an epidemic of black lung across Appalachia.

Now, the Republicans are trying to kill it: t.co/lTtAzS5Vq4

Mining is so hazardous to your lungs that many societies would refrain from using slave labor because it was more cost effective to just pay people to kill themselves doing it.

The pretense is always that learning about the history of racism will make (or is even MEANT to make) white kids feel guilty, which is just not how normal people react to things that happened before they were born. What they’re really afraid of is that it will make them feel outraged.

The many manifestations of racism — slavery, segregation, etc — were an integral part of not just African American history, but American history. Denying that reality and pretending racism wasn’t a serious problem is, in itself, racist.

Without even clicking the link, I’ll guess the reason — all the talk of racism makes white kids feel guilty. Again, if your kids are reading histories of slavery or segregation and identifying with the racists in the story, that suggests you’ve got your own problems to work through. Leave us out.

This is the part that I honestly just don't understand. I never, for one second, identified with the slave owners and segregationists when I was in school even though I grew up as a white kid in Virginia.

Yes Maryland is a contender for the bluest state in the country but there are 24 counties in this place and only 6 of them usually vote blue, two more lean blue of late and a couple tiny counties on the shore can swing. Lot of opportunities for right-wing county government shenanigans out there.

Teaching Black history is too much of an exercise in progressive politics according to Harford County. I guess because the entire history of this country is one example after another of dehumanizing Black people and fucking them over for profit and/or sport. Better to put fingers in one's ears.

like if your threshold is half the elected party and they were willing to ask him publicly to step aside (to be clear: a very big "if", and treating it as a hypothetical) and Biden said "fuck you", the election /is/ being sabotaged at that point, but by Biden, not by the ones calling on him to leave

And FWIW, in case this isn't entirely clear from the above, the point of an anonymous VONC isn't to force him out. It's to force the issue to a conclusion. Because it hurts /him/ for it to remain a live issue for several more weeks.

and that's where all the leaks and all the angst comes from: it's folks trying to probe for confidence in that number, when no confidence about it is available from public statements. It's a coordination problem

the basic problem is nobody in those group chats knows if the real number who would call for him to quit if they all were honest about it is 5% or 80% of the party, because they can't go public if it's 5%, and they can't tolerate the status quo if it's 80%.

If the number is big, then they can coordinate to remove him; if the number is small, they can stop bitching and coordinate to elect him. That's all it is.

Worth remembering that Trump tried to overturn the ACA without a replacement, which could have brought back lifetime caps and revoked coverage for pre-existing conditions. In other words, if he'd had his way, many more Americans could have gone bankrupt and died.
