A 1000-yr rain event over eastern #Kentucky in July 2022 resulted in floods that killed 45 people. Here's a link to my just-published open-access paper looking at topography, precipitation variability, mountaintop removal coal mining, and flood severity. ⚒️

The IRA has put money into renovating and upgrading energy infrastructure in America's school buildings. This is a huge deal. When's the last time you were in a school building? Tell your educator friends and colleagues. There is *uncapped* *noncompetitive* funding available.

It's been used for wastewater plants so maybe a possibility (total speculation here). Could it be used to finance some of the EV charging infrastructure being put up at libraries in SD??

Does anyone actually have solid resources on how IRA tax credits could be used by a WWTP or municipal agency that could be shared with civil/wastewater engineers? Can't find a good summary, nice example in OP here but need an explainer. @costasamaras.bsky.social ?

Gonna keep urging people to write postcards to voters in swing states or volunteer to phonebank from home. It's easy and every little bit counts and means a little bit less someone else has to do. As long as there's time, there's hope.

WTF. The electric company in Texas doesn't have a map of outages so people have been using the Whataburger App to figure out who lost power. This is like when Homer was using the Krusty Burger map when they got lost at sea.

Tbh they should have also consolidated the parking within the park into a structure and boosted public transit + bikes (and bike parking) into the park. The lane going thru the west side just gets packed during events and people speed and it's dumb.

I once witnessed a possibly 5 mph accident during afternoon rush hour while on the trails nearby. Sedan rearended a minivan, got pretty busted up, and the passenger got out and immediately tried to hitch hike. It was kinda surreal

Yeah so all of mission valley and the 163 thru the park kill me. They're rivers. They fill with water. These are floodplains. There's photos of cabrillo canyon or whatever filled with water prior to the highway construction.

the bike lane network is being built out slowly but surely. still ways away from a tipping point where getting around on a bike generally will not suck, and the diffuse way biking and walkability improvements are being spread throughout the city prob isn't helping

This is extremely informative - and NGL the op about it seeming disorganized/w.o vision is because it still comes off as that without getting into all the nuance, but maybe in 10 years everyone will be a lot happier

The Hillcrest/uptown community plan revision has a streetcar (probs sandag driven) proposal for 5th or 6th ave from downtown<->Hillcrest<->NP<->elsewhere. The latest draft X'd the 2035 date for a 2050 date. It doesn't even feel serious

Yeah not trying to defend things here, just point out there's some logic. OTOH they're densifying all over (~5k units) under construction Hillcrest/Np/downtown etc. and there's not even a consistent fixed track transit option (or bus that circulated the park).

Talk to the wastewater engineers in your life, they probably don't even know this is something that can change the dynamics and budgeting of their city's (or their clients) CIPs.

The IRA has literally driven money into refurbs and improvements at WWTP/WWRFs and schools. This is a huge amount of capital to make things better. Columbus practically HALVED the costs of major sewer treatment projects thru IRA.

Slashing methane is a major climate win from Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act. It’s $850 million (6% of EPA budget!) for “projects that help track — and stop — methane leaks tied to oil and gas production.” This would’ve a been career-defining win a decade ago. Now it’s Monday after holiday weekend.

“They want to eliminate national parks” is a very simple way to get just about anyone on the Stop Project 2025 train. Are there much more glaring and life-threatening goals of P25? Yes but even your most bigoted cousin does not want to see the parks system sold for parts.
