it is really funny to think of Jack Dorsey as a guy in your neighborhood who just wants to open a weird crypto-anarchist techno club like you’d see in The Matrix but keeps accidentally creating fun lil coffee shops

In a world where even a stripped-down search engine can't deliver a page of useful results when looking for anything that could possibly be purchased, I add this string: -etsy -ebay -pinterest -zazzle -amazon -aliexpress -alibaba -temu -wish -youtube -walmart

Brontësaurus. Ink & gouache on Strathmore grey toned paper, 151 x 147mm, 2014. Because this seems to be doing the rounds again elsewhere. Perhaps the only piece of mine to have gone mildly viral, shunted uncredited like an orphan from workhouse to workhouse across the Internet over the years. 🤓

Doing the math, less than 10 percent of people who follow me on the algorithm sites see my posts. They have no idea when books are out or if I’m visiting nearby because they’ll follow me & then the site makes sure they rarely, if ever, see me. This is why folks ask y’all to subscribe to newsletters.

90% of being a poet is just knowing what the names of the trees and the birds and the fish where you live are. The rest is just looking at them and writing it down.

If you could point people at the sale at www.etsy.com/shop/Lioness... it would improve life in Lionessland a lot right now. I am so grateful for your encouragement in the midst of So Many Things Going On.

Sale ends Sunday the 16th. I'll keep adding new things and new markdowns until then.

Reskeet with a vague proxy for how old you are. Before I hit puberty, my grandmother sent me to the post office with a quarter to buy a stamp, and I came back with a first class lickable stamp, a nickel, and a Dum Dum.

Poor people use libraries. Rich people shut them down because they don't *want* poor people to read.

Other countries have safety nets. The US has women.

Their labor creates the illusion of a DIY society, making it seem like we don't need a net.

Writing HOLDING IT TOGETHER was a labor of love and fury and I'm so grateful to share it with you all #PubDay

Library software demos are always interesting windows into other lives--because you inevitably have to have book titles show up in the software. Random vendor demo list of 12 titles today included @maryannemohanraj.bsky.social's A Feast of Serendib, which made me smile.

There is no honor in making others struggle solely because you did. Persevering through difficulty is worth celebrating, but is often worth even more if you can lessen the burden for those who come after you, especially those less fortunate, less privileged. That way lies glory.

Never forget that when Seoul, Korea removed the Cheonggyecheon expressway in 2003 and replaced it with a restored stream, 1000 acre park and improved transit, not only did it transform the city’s public life & economic success, but the traffic got better. The traffic got BETTER.

Does this make sense outside of my own brain? I have no idea. But I'm actually giving books a chance that technically have no chance, and they're the books I want them to be. End multi-response!

A traditionally marketable book has those options too, but I feel like when I've said "oh, this one's for trad publishers," it's consigned to a fate of staying marketable, or becoming more marketable, not going where it's most satisfying for me.

Between self-pub/Patreonesque things, I feel like there are more options to get books into the hands of people who actually want them, without going through the people who don't think enough people want them. Have not tested for myself, but I see it happening again and again, and not outlier cases.

I'm at the point of thinking that there're actually more options for an unmarketable book than a marketable book.

Global fertility drop is scaring people! Le gasp! I waited so long to try having children that I failed the fertility roll -- bc of challenges of being a working parent + the impossibility of staying home. Support parents properly, you'll get a bounce back. UBI? Children galore. Pay teachers, too!

Poking through my journals for an old address, on December 3rd, age 14, I wrote: "I entered a writing contest and lost." I maundered a bit about it, but in a braggy way. "Given my chosen career, my talent and desire, and I lost!" Bless your heart, little one. You're so precious.

I inventory my mindshelf like others count sheep. I usually drift off to sleep somewhere around Marion Chesney--the furthest I've gotten is Garth Nix. I pass Achebe with some guilt, because I borrowed Things Fall Apart from my junior high bestie and never returned it. But it doesn't keep me up.

Further caveat: This was me going off the bookshelf in my head. I'm sure I've read 5 books by more A & B authors than this, but I've not owned their books--my mindshelf is my actual shelf (shelves) from memory.

Caveats: This was eleven authors, because I damn well wasn't going to make a list of ten authors and leave off Stephanie when she was next. Shoulda been 12 authors, but I gave the cut direct to someone--and I've never read more than probably 4 Asimovs
