For the “nothing happened” after 2020 crowd. Actually something is still happening-changes sparked by movement are ongoing.Police departments are smaller&experiments (yes experiments!)in public safety beyond policing are more funded&widespread than ever. This is actually how durable change is built.

Interesting thing here is that while political attempts to defund have faced major pushback and generally not made it into policy, police depts. are shrinking anyway, which might partly be a result of *societal* pushback against the police

My latest is up now in Slate. It’s an election year where crime is an issue, so essential to raise this issue sooner than later: THE 1994 CRIME BILL DID NOT CAUSE MASS INCARCERATION. It didn’t. It. Just. Did. Not.

Even before the uprisings in Minneapolis in 2020, communities there have been radically reimagining a world that doesn't depend on policing for safety.

Sociologist @michellesphelps.bsky.social explores these efforts—and the hard work that lies ahead in this excerpt from 'The Minneapolis Reckoning.'

Y'all, it's cj nerd christmas -- the BJS has released the 2022 correctional pop reports (yes, in 2024). The good news? It's the 15th yr of declining numbers. The bad? Pandemic drops in jail/prison pops reversed.

Phelps "argues that Minneapolis, a progressive, majority-white city marked by a history of police violence and racial segregation, is a ;secret bellwether city for understanding race and policing in America' and 'a test case for both the possibilities and limits of liberal police reform.'"

I wasn't expecting the first longform review of The Minneapolis Reckoning to pop up on Reason, of all places, but here were are! It's a fair shake, though I think the book has implications far beyond MN.

"Importantly, the continued decline in officers in 2023 has not led to an increase in violent crime, which is receding alongside the pandemic. What all of that means is that Minneapolis has the opportunity now to make good on its promises of building a transformative new model of public safety."

A point of frustration that I have as chair: sometimes, grad students desperately need to take medical and/or personal leave, but universities won't pay the stipend and health care since they're not working. The US needs national leave policies. Desperately. Yesterday!

I hope the book can restart and improve our recurring national conversation about police violence and how to create and sustain better models of safety, incl. innovations around community capacity building, violence interruption, and mental/behavioral health crisis response.

My book with @princetonupress.bsky.social is officially out today! 🙏 The book traces how years (+ previous decades) of organizing pushed the city to the brink of ending its police department, why it didn't happen, and how public safety has changed after George Floyd's murder. hubs.ly/Q02tDsCx0
