L.A. in the 1930s was so full of good-guys-turned-bad-guys it could make your head spin. I mean, I knew the vibes that brought Chandler and Cain to write what they did, but the details are something else.

Doing a little archive reading and in the 1930s LA was home to a "love market" that got busted and hit the papers.

Oh I see. This wasn't about the source but about how terrible American news has been in the last week. Democracy is actually in peril.

Exactly! I couldn't get past one episode. OK I couldn't recommend this to my elders, but yours might like Harlots on Hulu, a feminist brothel story starring Samantha Morton en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlots...

Lmao they just changed the title of the piece from “Why I don’t vote” to “Why I won’t vote” rather than tell readers that the guy actually does vote

Dude votes. I know it's a holiday weekend, but that would be a minimal editorial check, yes?

Then: Mix meat, crumbs, onion, rice, egg, paste and S&P and shape into golf-ball sized balls. Pile into a well-oiled casserole. Mix soup and water and pour over balls. Bake at 350 degrees for an hour. "When done, the rice has puffed up and projects out through the balls, quite decoratively."

Perhaps you haven't come up with what to bring to that BBQ later. May I suggest Yummy Balls, from the 1953 Ebell Club of Los Angeles Cookbook?

Who needs the Las Vegas Sphere? In 1974 the Kodak Bubble Theater debuted at the World's Fair. It seated 200 who watched "a movie on environment" in an air-supported bubble of "plastic-impregnated fabric."

This 1963 paperback, You Can Trust the Communists (to be Communists), was from the trailing end of the Red Scare, oringally published by the Christian Anti-Communist Crusade in California. I think it's hysterical, both ways.

I'm exhausted by the NYT trying to take down a presidential candiate -- if only it were the one with the felonies! -- so I'm going to try to add some fun randomness to the timeline.

Sticking with Biden or running Harris would be *far* less risky than dedicating two of the next four months to Democrat infighting, followed by an unprecedented delegate voting process and dubious chances of even getting on the ballot. Knowing this shit is supposed to be these people's job

note that when companies announce things like this, they're announcing a *choice* they made the announcement could easily have been "Google falling short of no-big-deal AI target, cites important climate needs"

Yes, it seems to be a non-issue that 78-year-old Donald Trump was incapable of staying awake during his own criminal trial. He's a spring chicken, you see, the very picture of youthful vigor.

Under today’s immunity decision, Biden could order AG Garland to immediately prosecute Thomas and Alito for corruption and insurrection. (Official act). If Garland refuses, Biden can fire him and replace him with someone who will. (Official act) I would suggest Elie Mystal.

a thing to remember, in all of this horror, is that these are not the actions of a political party that is confident it represents the will of the people, and who is currently out of power and enslaved to a deeply flawed avatar. the struggle is not over and they have not won

Kamala Harris isn't some perfect solution to all that ails the Democratic party. But she is basically the only other plausible option, and insisting that a white or male figure untested on the national stage is somehow a safer option is telling on your own racial and gender attitudes.
