Kamala Harris isn't some perfect solution to all that ails the Democratic party. But she is basically the only other plausible option, and insisting that a white or male figure untested on the national stage is somehow a safer option is telling on your own racial and gender attitudes.
Most Americans would rather vote for a convicted rapist than a person of color, LGBTQ, female, or Muslim candidate. Apparently. The media seem to reflect that perspective. This is an inevitable reckoning for the US that will end in violence. I think that’s inevitable now. @chrislhayes.bsky.social
Ah, no. As a Michigan resident, I've seen what Gretchen Whitmer has accomplished, and done so with a GOP led legislature. Your implication that only racism or sexism could lead someone to prefer Newsom/Whitmer over Harris is not only wrong, it is offensive. (PS: I voted Harris in the 2020 primary).
It would help if she had a more visible record as VP. Folks on the far left don't like prosecutors/cops. Folks on the right (and also the left) don't like women or black people. She would have a tough hill to climb, assuming Biden wins, Harris will have a primary battle in 2028.
We can all debate whether America will elect a Black woman as president in the abstract, but will this electorate choose a sane, competent and centrist politician who is under the age of 60 instead of a convicted felon and chaos agent? I will take those odds.
She's basically the only path forward that doesn't balkanize the entire Democratic Party and lead to a nightmare at the convention. Even the farther left wing seems to be all right with it because they're being realistic about the situation. If Biden does a torch pass, it's weirdly straightforward.
Yea shes definitely not "tested" either on top of her only being placed on Biden's ticket due to DEI she wasn't elected and we saw what she did in California when she was elected to an office… if they're not going to replace him with an actual quality candidate he's still the best bet at this point
I think Dem voters would get over their hesitations with Harris the minute they saw the contrast in energy and enthusiasm she’d display at campaign rallies, etc. Her events as the VP candidate were surprisingly electric. And, her prosecuting Trump on the debate stage would be awesome.
She’s the only choice if Biden steps aside. The more obvious solution seems to be for the (actual) liberal media to start covering VP Harris like they would cover Biden. She’s very good on the campaign trail, but no press covers her, so no one knows. Get her on Maddow, 60 minutes, Smartless, etc.
Buttigieg polls better than Harris.
Democrats HAVE to go with the strongest possible candidate in the eyes of voters! The risk of having an authoritarian fascist is too great, and growing by the day!
the thing is that it's ALL up to Joe, his wife and doctors. If there really is no medical there there, it's arthritis and a cold, they know that. If it's not, they know that too, and I for one will be REALLY PISSED if it's the latter and they still elect to proceed.
Re Kamala; it's also up to Joe.
Irma Sánchez PhD replies: I wonder then what your exclusion of
Hillary Rodham Clinton says about your racial and gender attitudes.
Harris will lose, centrists like me and the far left of our party simply won't support her. Hillary, however, has the center, right and is gaining some of the left .
I don't see President Biden dropping out in any way. But to think VP Harris stepping aside for one of these other people is silly. A much more acceptable scenario would be VP Harris at the top of the ticket and one of the hyped people (from a swing state) as the running mate.
How could Kamala Harris do worse? If the Ds are going to lose, lose in a good way, with materials to rebuild. Biden is, I think, going to weigh on races downticket. This is not good.
I find it interesting that a bad debate is worse than 34 felony convictions. I mean really? Ok…MAGA’s I get. But rank and file American voters? I guess this country really is in trouble.
Yeah I mean she can’t win, but if she can’t, nobody else can either. Only way you have something like that happen is if the party leadership turns over 100%.
I’m not a fan of her bc of her record in California, but let’s be real, people.
right. “we cannot trust the person who was on a winning national ticket to win again, our only hope is someone who has never run a national campaign in any capacity and has never been vetted on the presidential scale.” word?
“Work twice as hard for half the credit.” The problem is that even the white guy isn’t getting half the credit for what he’s done. They can’t ignore the racism and misogyny of the average voter… even democrats. But they are ignoring that Biden has been doing his job quite well for four years.
assume that Biden was polling well and did great at the debate, but suddenly died this weekend. we obviously wouldn’t have a convention! the candidate would be Harris! come on, people!
it has very '90s Democratic air of, "well, there's a lot of GOP complaining about this, let's take issue off the table by completely ignoring it. I'm sure the NYTimes will follow our lead."
It's strange but voters are sold on people with the courage of their convictions. Why the Yeast quote stings.
Harris will get demolished. The RealDems have no solution to this problem. They demand control over nomination, they deserve the outcome. The rest of us do not.
Kamala Harris is tested AND FAILED on the national stage.
Her signature policy is fighting to keep prisoners in jail after their sentences were up because her donors wanted the $2/day slave labor.
Bernie is the only national figure scrappy enough to beat Trump, but the DNC prefers corrupt Trump.
I'm not a fan, but she'd probably be the best of the people waiting in the wings.
Tho it'd be funny to watch Mayor Pete jump into the ring and totally eat shit. I hate that little twerp.
It isn’t. It is acknowledging latent and deep-seated, even unconscious, racism and sexism in American society.
Calling those of us who acknowledge limiting all variables increases our chances of winning racists is just an ad hom.
shes also a zionist who supports the systemic bloodshed of innocent Palestinians.
anybody who can meet the extremely low bar of not supporting one of the worst genocides we have ever seen, no matter their race or gender, is an infinitely better choice.
I'm fine with the wishcasting around Beshear or whoever, precisely because the party uniting very quickly around Harris is, or was, the only way Biden could be induced to step aside in the first place.
Biden isn't stepping down. There's no reason for him to. Stuttering & trying to fact check a rapid firing liar in a single debate does not undo all his qualifications.Trump sh*t his pants on live mic at the same debate, why hasn't the NY times ran a single story saying that rapist felon should quit?
I think there is a plausible argument that Whitmer (twice elected in a must win state) is the best general election candidate for the Dems.
I also think it’s hard to imagine a process by which someone other than Harris ends up with the nomination that isn’t extremely messy.
