Hugely instructive that industry is pushing for this liability protection for CO2 storage. They know it is dangerous.

We are poised to make the same mistakes with carbon capture storage that we made with fracking. Did you know they are passing laws in states to exempt oil and gas companies from future liability for injected CO2?

Honestly still in shock that the most crooked American President in history said "I need immunity" and the GOP Supreme Court said "well, it's nowhere in the constitution, but sure, why not? Whats the worst that could happen?"

"With fear for our democracy, I dissent," is about as bedrock and terrifying and vital a statement as you're going to get. That's a line you spraypaint on walls, that you ink into your skin. And it's chilling that it is necessary to say at all.

It reads: "without methane controls, the world can’t limit temperature increases, which then dampens the prospects for natural gas usage; methane is a byproduct of the fuel that has economic value if recaptured." Methane is not a byproduct of natural gas. It is natural gas.

I am one of the people who thinks the benefits of the tax credits in the IRA have been way overhyped, but I realized just now that the law may actually save climate policymaking in the US by explicitly defining CO2 as a pollutant that the EPA can regulate under the Clean Air Act.

And wherever possible we can move to ground-source heat pumps for air-conditioning, which require far less electricity.

We can stop this by quickly cutting greenhouse gas pollution, especially of fast-acting climate pollutants like methane, aka natural gas. We can invest in the grid, making sure infrastructure can handle demand spikes from air conditioning.

I suggest we let the Supreme Court decide whether or not geoengineering will be a climate salvation or a global disaster. They are so confident in their views and knowledge.

Biden leaned into climate & environmental justice, & delivered in ways that would’ve been unimaginable a decade ago. It’s a huge part of the Admin priorities & accomplishments- b/c it’s important! We always need to push for more, forever. But if the climate coalition shrugs “meh”, we aren’t serious.

Just came across this report from April that nicely summarizes many reasons NOT to use hydrogen for heating in homes. H2 mixed with methane increases explosion risk & greatly increases methane leaks.

Stanford is very aware of that reputational damage, too. To help repair the harm they've done the School of Sustainability's rep by taking fossil fuel money, they recently hired a PR firm....that also does greenwashing for oil and gas companies.

This is quite poor, and morally vapid. This report essentially claims there are no values underlying a school of sustainability (!!!) that would preclude acceptance of money from effectively any source (regardless how unaligned the corporate donor's values are with the mission of the school).

This will create utter chaos in the courts, as no one knows what the rules are now. There are more than 100 federal court decisions based on the 1984 Chevron v NRDC precedent SCOTUS just overturned. It's the most cited case in the whole field of administrative law.

The biggest disaster of the last 24 hours is actually the Supreme Court ruling that overturns 40 years of deference to the expertise of regulators in cases about pollution, drug safety, food safety, climate change — you name it, the Court just gelded it. Even if Biden is reelected, we're weakened.

The "city of the future" looks a lot like Utrecht, with frequent trains, the world's greatest bicycle parking garage and smart signals that give cyclists extra time to keep going when it's raining. Utrecht, remarkably, is 600 years old and a lot more advanced than any city in the US.

Congratulations, you've *finally* cottoned on to the entire point of the nuclear push.

It's a purely ideological attempt to slow down or stop the rollout of renewables. It's not about positive belief in nuclear, cheaper electricity, or any of that. #AusPol

“A simplistic shift toward company-led reporting without a critical tightening of existing regulations risks further underestimating Australia’s coal mine methane, and undermines efforts to actually reduce real emissions," Self reporting of methane in the US is a disaster. Not a model to follow.

Now that Google serves me up news from the past, I get to see who deluded we were in 2007. "If one really tightens emissions, the amount of methane in the atmosphere 10 years from now could be less than it is today," Rowland said.

Interesting from the study mentioned and linked in this Guardian article. "The pollutants can therefore be transported for long distances, such that in the United States, a majority of early deaths due to power plant air pollution occur after the pollution has crossed state lines."
