Easy to lose sight of the significance here, but the sitting president just gave a speech condemning the Supreme Court for a ruling that expands presidential power. It’s also a president who stands to benefit from this ruling, given that his opponent is vowing to imprison him and his family.
Time to sign an executive order calling for the impeachment of the current Supreme Court and an immediate re-seating by a new panel of justices perhaps?
I was wondering how the conservative Supremes were going to weave through the issue to give Trump a huge advantage while not quite going full Bill of Attainder. They did with absolute immunity for "Official" actions, leaving a vague definition of "Official" to be dragged out in the lower courts.
Yeah --- for some reason, I think that if Trump takes power and prosecutes Biden, SCOTUS will come up with some excuse to explain why it's okay to prosecute BIDEN.
What am I saying? SCOTUS wouldn't even hear the case.
I don't know how they walk this back given that they have proven they are lawless.
We make new laws, they'll ignore those too.
The only way around this is removing them from the bench. Or expanding it, but removing them seems easier
Now that they gave Biden the power to do so.
He should use it.
In my opinion, the conservative members of the Supreme Court represent a clear and present danger to the ongoing stability and peace of the United States.
Given that situation, a President would be well within his Core Constitutional powers to eliminate that danger
You are assuming that this Supreme Court would abide by their decision when evaluating the prosecution of a Democratic president by a Trump justice department. They most certainly would instead find a way to exempt Biden from immunity and prosecute him no matter how hollow the charge.
He did the most Democratic thing ever, which was to agree with a meaningless dissent and then tell us that as President he didn't have the power or legitimacy to do anything about it and that it was up to us.
USA ON CUSP OF TYRANNY The Supreme Court's ruling that shields the President frm prosecution in office kindles abuse of power&erosion of democracy. Trump's return to the White House is worry for coups&death of constitutional democracy, rule of law&America's global leadership!
Jeesh, for a (decent & honest) president who just said he thinks th decisions by th SC was bad 4 r democracy, you guys r condemning him b/c he's not, what - getting rid of them? Shooting them on site? Start criming so he can be 'immune'? He's doing his job, that's what he's doing. Guess who won't.
I am thankful that you landed in this place because so many of the libertarianish people didn't. I'm also thankful I landed here after being so wrong about some of these people.
The democrats are not now and will never be equipped to
actually defend democracy. They literally cannot countenance getting dirty at home, now matter how many kids they kill abroad
But SCOTUS gets to decide whether the President is doing an 'official' or an 'unofficial' act, where only the latter can be prosecuted. And you know how this SCOTUS would treat Biden versus Trump doing dictator crap. Justice Roberts just crowned himself King of America. May that crown rest uneasy.
Well, yeah, except that he—and all of us—know perfectly well that this ruling provides immunity to Trump, and Trump alone. It'll be reversed the moment it's no longer convenient for Trump, or reinterpreted to withdraw immunity for whatever some Dem president is accused of by a Trump DoJ...
All I heard was a bunch of useless spew wrapped around typical democratic leadership cowardliness.
Maybe seeing their colleagues led to prison or worse will get these ancient fucks to try to do something beyond “vote harder”.
Ha! Never happened yet. Never going to happen now.
Pathetic.
This new executive power isn't for Democratic presidents, though. Just Republicans. The majority will twist as many logic pretzels as they need to justify whatever outcome they want.
Mind you the court will almost certainly declare anything Biden does as 'not an official action' because they hate his guts, but considering he could just replace all of them via threat of violence and legally get away with it...
Sadly he will not do that because he is, alas, a fucking coward
The Supreme Court just put Trump in a position to do whatever he wants with a second term and face no consequences. We’re going to seriously regret their decision.
@radleybalko.bsky.social he can't be tried for anything he did that was an official act, but Trump can simply hold him indefinitely without trial. After all, that's an official act, too. Or just have him shot.
