at the core of conservative jurisprudence - and conservative thought more generally - is an empathy gap the further a person is from their own direct experience the less that person is, to them, a real human being with thoughts and feelings and their own lived existence

This was a local law in San Diego back in 2005. They called it "illegal lodging" and it could land you in county lockup for 90 days if the wrong cop saw you sleeping under a tree in a public park. Nevermind that a family of 4 could be taking a nap on a blanket 30 feet away in the same park.

We've seen this for years. Repubs are hateful and awful about gay people, then SURPRISE, one of their kids or grandkids come out as gay and then things change for them. But not until then.

In my view the core of conservatism is authoritarianism. They view some groups as better than the rest, more deserving of empathy/dignity/respect/power, while others are not. Which is why they have no empathy for the homeless and all the empathy for a rich white young male rapist. The gap is biased.

the 'empathy gap' is really the perfect term for it. Like someone can look on someone less fortunate/struggling and think 'you made far worse decisions than me therefore you asked for this' without realising they are couple of life events away from a similar situation

San Francisco, you know the most (or one of the most) leftist cities in the country, that SF? passed a sit lie ordinance by public vote in around 2010 making it illegal to sleep on sidewalks. It isn't enforced anymore, but I think it's still on the books. It isn't just conservative jurisprudence.

every rural douchebag i've ever spoken to about cities says they don't want to live there because of "homeless people". your theory holds up.

I think Republicans are just mean little sadists, deriving joy from imagining the pain they might be able to inflict on others.

And don't discount that part of the decision had an element of Christofascism to it. The only shelter in town was mad the couldn't proselytize at a captive audience.

I wholeheartedly agree. I wish I knew why that is true, because it seems like a fixable problem. And it causes so much unnecessary pain and suffering.

Which is, on it's own, enough of a reason to never allow so much wealth to be concentrated into the hands of a few. Then there's the threat to, well, everything else...

It’s not an empathy gap, the conservatives want to enslave people, sending them to prison is the fastest way to do that

“wow that could be me” never crosses their minds until it actually happens to them at which point all of a sudden compassionate policy and easy forgiveness is the only natural path forward, how could you not be sympathetic to their plight

Can you begin to imagine how much money their buddies are about to make at the expense of the chinless sister fuckers who think they're upholding some sort of actual values who will ultimately pay for jailing the homeless?
