I like the coconut tree memes as much as everyone else but I do think we should all be on the same page about Harris's quote actually making sense when you realize she was telling a story about her mom and illustrating a point about education.

the “some folks just need killing” thing out of north carolina reminds me of a third thing these annoying people are right about: as long as the republican bloodlust grows and their power is unbroken, every election probably will be the most important one of your life

We have a lot going on over here right now but one of the few remaining things that unite us in this bizarre joke of a country is contempt for British hierarchies. So congrats to Prime Minister Starmer and hope he fixes the NHS soon.

This feels like the Norway Debate in May 1940 but instead of tossing Chamberlain everyone is standing by him anyway. Harris isn’t Churchill, of course. But she’s pretty good. Make the switch and let’s go win this.

One of the worst aspects of the Democratic Party is the insistence on circling the wagons and attacking critics even when the party is on course to lose. Instead they need to be laser focused on winning. If the numbers show Biden is the better bet, keep him. If not, we go to Harris. Simple as that.

To repeat what I wrote a few days ago: if the undaunted sorriness of the Times this cycle doesn't convince at least a funder or two of the need to scale up a Democratic partisan press, nothing ever will.

Pretty sure Dash Sulzberger’s lapses (of news judgment) and John Roberts’ lapses (of fidelity to his oath) concern me a great deal more than the disputable ones the Times keeps hyping.

super interesting to me that Harris doesn’t just do better than Biden here but does better than most of the floated alternatives www.cnn.com/2024/07/02/p...

Just my gut, but I think today is the tipping point, and it's only a matter of time until Kamala Harris is the Democratic nominee for president this year. Which I strongly support and I am all in on Harris '24.

This poll is extremely convincing: • 13 point swing to Harris among independents • 8 point swing to Harris among POC • 6 point to Harris among women I strongly agreed with your column anyway but this poll is rock solid evidence that it's time to make the switch. Let Harris win.

Oh, and:

—Independents:
Trump leads Biden 44/34.
Harris leads Trump 43/40.

—People of color: Biden +21. Harris +29.

(via @taniel.bsky.social)

I think that just about clinches it. Time to swap out Biden for Harris.

The dam may finally be breaking. Hoping we have a new nominee (Kamala Harris) by the end of the month, perhaps sooner.

I think a deeper problem is how primary voters try to guess who general election voters will like (and how the media feeds that thinking) rather than just picking the person who appeals to them. There’s sort of this assumption of “I get this candidate, but I’m smarter than other people”

Exactly this. Many of the people downplaying a second Trump term are leftists who are trying to find excuses to vote against Biden.

The thing I can't stop thinking about is this: I'm 48, and in my adult lifetime there has been one Republican who won the popular vote. But I will probably spend the rest of my life under the authority of a Supreme Court dominated by hard right conservatives. How is that democracy?

Whether it’s Biden, Harris, or someone else, we gotta vote for the Democratic nominee in November because a second Trump term would be extremely bad.

Agreed. MAGA is going to believe they really can have a dictatorship and will not let go of that if they lose a close election this fall. Impunity for what they have always wanted to do (kill us all) is now within their grasp and it will embolden them.

Once a fascist authoritarian seizes power, it is extremely difficult to dislodge them. It took Spain and Portugal 40+ years! The best solution is to prevent them from taking power in the first place. This is why you're voting for Biden or Harris or whoever the Dem nominee is in November.

For decades, Nixon's "If the president does it, it isn't illegal" line was widely and correctly understood to be dangerous nonsense incompatible with democracy and freedom. What the Supreme Court presupposes is: So what?

I think we have a better shot winning with her than with him because I don’t think we can convince enough voters to choose Biden given that he clearly cannot serve the full four years, even against Trump.

Talking to some normie voters this weekend - Dems, indies, older, younger - and I don’t see how Biden can continue as the nominee. Nobody believes he can serve another 4 years. People wonder if he can make another 6 months. (He can.) It’s time to bring on Kamala Harris.

If my daddy gifted me a large, national newspaper in my 30s even though I’d only ever worked in a real job for 3 years, I simply wouldn’t use it to try to destroy Black women, trans people, or American democracy in a fit of pique, but then again I am not New York Times publisher AG Sulzberger.

Both the “black jobs” remark and using palestinian as a slur are hopefully clarifying as to actual Trump’s ideology and worldview, in contrast with the imaginary trump some people have built up in their heads as the memory of his administration has receded

Biden did flameout in the primary. Twice! His 1988 run was an embarrassment. His 2008 run was weak. His 2020 run was seen as a joke until suddenly he won.

these numbers are basically vindication of one of my points in the NYT conversation, which is that whoever is the nominee inherits Biden’s position for the simple reason that they will be standard-bearers for the Biden administration.

The NYT editorial board presents itself as like a wise adjunct group of strategists advising Democrats how to run their shop, but (a) it’s run and largely staffed by de facto Republican operatives and (b) it has no similar paternalistic scrutiny for Republicans.

So is keeping him. But we’ll see what happens. If the polls remain stable or Biden recovers from this then it’ll be fine. If Biden’s poll numbers drop then he’ll have to go.
