super interesting to me that Harris doesn’t just do better than Biden here but does better than most of the floated alternatives www.cnn.com/2024/07/02/p...

Why are we (and the media) still talking about this, when the parting shot fired by SCOTUS to usher in authoritarianism in America has been fired? Where’s the media’s demand that Trump should be replaced for running as a FELON? Convicted RAPIST?

How much weight would you give a poll like this? It made me think of how Clinton's approval tended to spike while she wasn't running and tank when she did.

I like Harris a lot actually. Frankly I just worry America is too racist and sexist for her to do better than an old white man. If it weren't for that I'd say absolutely go with her. I just don't trust Americans. I think we're a much nastier people than we pretend to be.

The natural test for this would just be to let her fend off any challengers at the convention. If she can’t do that with the advantage of being the sitting VP, she doesn’t have the confidence of the party and has got no business being the nominee. (I think she’s clearly up to that challenge.)

given that Harris will already be on the ticket, would it be enough to just increase her profile rather than swap Biden out entirely? A vote for Biden will already be a vote for Harris. Is it enough just to remind people of this fact?

Just posted this a few mins ago b/f seeing your post, but after noticing the same thing, that I wonder if voters have priced in, as of 2020, the idea Biden was running as a 1-term transition president to Harris, and so a transition there would be less disturbing to voters than to another candidate

I think this also solves a different upcoming debate problem, because Harris can likely keep the focus on Trump in a second debate with him, and a replacement-level Democrat would likely fare well against Vance or Scott or Rubio or whoever. Just one debate thought.

I think that poll demonstrates a fundamental problem in the Dem party. We’re passionate about thinking about “how it can be better” to the point where we can’t align on getting something done. While the republicans are willing to ignore all kinds of beliefs to get their candidate into office.

I really liked Harris in 2020, before she was on the ticket. I really liked her as a senator. Being the VP sucks, you can't really do much, can't outshine the prez, but you still get maligned constantly on RW media. I think if you let Harris off the leash her message might really resonate.

You could see a world where Biden does a graceful handoff at the convention, talking about being a transitional president and wanting to assure we keep a lawless president out of office, and Harris is the best person to do that--and it turns out more-or-less okay. But that's assuming a lot.

I believe these numbers. I don’t think she’d do so well in an open primary but I do see why she’s ahead in this context. It’s a bit like the case with Biden: if she could consistently do her best during a campaign, debates, etc, she could win, but if she is her average self or worse, she will lose.
