and of course, once the fraud is found out and we actually stop burning underground hydrocarbons for energy, the pumping and mining won't stop - we'll just turn it all into plastic that we'll fraudulently say is "recycleable"

this instinct is resulting from just how completely the idea that "nothing will fundamentally change" has consumed our entire culture - carbon capture was never anything but a distraction to delay the end of emissions

Meanwhile, Mexico elects the mayor that gave 100,000 people ivermectin to treat COVID because “she did her research” only to then make the architect of the whole intervention the person in charge of a federal office for digital infrastructure. Epic hold my beer.

Centrists want another Trump administration, all the evidence is there, and the only way to conclude otherwise is to be reborn each day with a baby's brain.

I get why this is the case, but it’s so wild that one million Americans died of COVID because of Trump’s handling of the pandemic, and it’s not even remotely an issue in this election. What a country!

The reason we hear so much meritocracy propaganda is that it's the only socially acceptable origin story for the people it happend to work out for, could stay in the game longer thanks to generational wealth, or are just pretending to have "made it." You can't grind your way to a just society.

If you’re wondering why all of corporate media is working to end democracy and elect Trump it’s because it’s the business plot for the 21st century. We must stop these people if we want to survive.

The memoryhole shit is really strange; just 15 years ago the reactionary view on this was encapsulated by Dennis Leary: “Where I come from, we don't call a guy like that a victim of Asperger's. We just call him an asshole Who Won't Shut The Fuck Up.” - now it's straight up erasure

It's worth considering why the media - with many outlets funded by or directly owned by oil interests - does so many stories about difficulties of long road trips in EVs and so few about how you can fill your car up at home and never visit a gas station or charger ever. bsky.app/profile/tom4...

Loved living in Davis 2009-2018, and basically only drove to leave town, but a town of college people is more easily persuaded to bike. Permanent residents in town still drive way too much, and are why the town had to invest in all those protected lanes instead of closing more roads to cars.

The fun thing about stories like these is they seem twee and inconsequential but are potentially more serious than any of the political stuff dominating the headlines, given the possibility of collapsing ecosystems, food supplies, civilisation.

The only way to survive living in a "Credulous Age" where the world has become so complex that we rely on experts for EVERYTHING is to become ruthless empiricists. But that is asking people to do a lot of cognitive lifting they would much rather not do.

yes, we boiled the planet, but it was worth it to make a machine that, instead of adding two plus two, takes the statistical average of every answer to questions containing "what" "is" "two" and "plus" from a database of illegal cell phone transcripts and returns a fake nude pic of a high schooler

It's maddening because people refuse to acknowledge this problem - by parting out ecological catastrophe to "climate" "pollution" "biodiversity" people think the status quo just needs tweaking. "the transition to wind and solar mean we can keep doing what we're doing!"

The people who think Harris would do better than Biden have absolutely refused to watch the meltdowns that happen just about any time she gets near a mic. Call it a panic attack, fancy benzos we can only imagine, or just straight up android chatbot malfunction, it won't play well.

One of the most painful things about our American crisis is how it takes focus away from climate change - the single most important issue of our lifetimes. Of any lifetimes. The first 6 months of 2024 were the hottest ever measured. So far.

Problem is "not uniquely bad" does not exclude "bad". Have you taken the time to watch her in front of a mic? It's uncanny valley shit - if AI is real it's powering this cyborg. That this also describes other bad candidates does not inspire confidence against trump.

Part of building power for labor, making progress towards social democracy, is staying motivated in the face of failure. I honestly don't know how to make progress past this moment. I'm sure there were times in the past when people were more dug into their positions than now but it's bad out there.

"Get organizing!" Have people actually knocked on doors, talked to their fellow union members, helped at a tail light repair clinic, etc? We've already mobilized who we can. All we have to show for it is "1/3rd of people want to kill 1/3 of their neighbors while the last 1/3rd watches"

IDK man, talking to my fellow union members, people are already mentally prepared to accept life under fascism as long as they get a paycheck. Might not be ideal, but as long as a basic level of comfort is met for them personally it's gonna be hard to get them riled up enough to strike.

I don't want some egghead bureaucrat telling me whether there's poison in the water I drink. Ideally I'd want that decided by a 29yo judge who went to a "biblical law school" and does not believe dinosaurs existed, and then to have that decision reaffirmed six years later by the Supreme Court.
