The 'you're not choosing a life partner, you're picking a bus - go with the one that gets you closest' analogy helped me overcome the anguish of compromise when no single offering maps to my beliefs. Better to get roughly thereabouts than zooming off in the opposite direction

Thank you. That's disappointing. If we can't put a cross in a box when our survival is threatened, even if more in hope than expectation, then we're in trouble

Fed up with him clearly benefiting from everything he professes to stand against: anti-EU with an EU passport and MEP pension; anti-elitist who throws a tantrum when his balance no longer qualifies for a Coutts account. Can we agree to deprive him of the oxygen of publicity now?

Now, what do we do to stop Farage in his slimy tracks? Might have helped oust Tories but he's already given far too much latitude by the media to drive the national discourse and is a leech on the body politic (and not in a medical assistance kind of way)

Promise I googled first, and checked the Guardian live results, but does anyone have stats on turnout for this UK general election. Guardian said our constituency was 68%, but I can't find for overall

right wing govts across the world have spent the entire period since the 2010s weakening and looting the countries that were fool enough to elect them and the flow of kickbacks to legacy media has ensured collaboration in the whole project. Enough.

Notice how everyone is somehow talking about Biden Too Old right now, and NOT about how the Supreme Court just legalized Trump being a dictator for life and gutted the administrative state, and how the Heritage Foundation is now issuing terrorist threats? Think that might not be an accident?

Bought Nine as a charity shop DVD. Redonated it after watching 10 minutes. The loathing was visceral. Didn't even want the disc in my house

Montana dude ranch. Bus drop off roadside. As I walked up the long dusty driveway a rottweiler barrelled towards me. I stopped, briefly terrified, until he plonked his bottom on my feet and leaned his whole weight against my legs. 'Are you babyin' muh dawg?' asked a cowboy. Great start to a holiday

Okay so to be clear we are destroying power grids, the livelihoods of actual humans beings, and communication/research infrastructure for the sake of an algorithm that converts stolen data into unreliable stolen data and consistently loses millions of dollars. Just to be clear

It’s so cool that cities are like “pweeease only turn your AC on if you’re actively dying and don’t go below 79 🥺🤘🏻💗” while the AI nobody asked for is slurping up the power grid to make 1 image of a girl with 5 tits

Nope, nopety nope. I forced myself to reread Cider before starting a writing course several years ago, needed to find a first person narrative to present and similarly blamed Lessons and thought I'd be a grown up and check. Child uses were absolutely right.

Haven't read Murukami since, although I occasionally pick Wind Up Bird Chronicles off the shelf in a fit of wistful nostalgia for the early thrill, before deciding I'm still not ready and shelving it again

Ground my way through it, bored and resentful (this was before I learned it was ok to give up on books) and needed several months to get back to reading. Re-entered via fun, plotty, YA when I finally felt strong enough to open a book again

It's not very interesting: I just questioned my entire ability to read, let alone appreciate literature. Having loved the handful of other works I'd read, I thought I 'loved Murukami' but I loathed KotS with a violence previously only reserved for Cider With Rosie (forced school reading)

And from the Brexit side of that analogy the commitment from all parties to avoid admitting they made a catastrophic mistake treating a (badly constructed, Russian influenced) advisory referendum result as a mandate to destroy decades of policy has polluted all discourse since with scary doublethink

Do worry that our young people, brilliant and energetic and engaged though they are, have been permanently damaged by being raised in a culture that treated them as consumers first, people second. I buy therefore I am.

The Cat Who Visits has an orange neck because it has been very, very, very wet and the red collar her people have put on her in a forlorn attempt to establish ownership clearly isn't colour fast. Turns out she does NOT take being laughed at at all well. High Dudgeon With Orange Neck is impressive

Not a day goes by where generative AI doesn’t show its ass as a shady, exploitative, soul-stealing content grab. One that destroys the fidelity of information and helps to drain vital environmental resources.

Abandoned my plan of working late, watched the sun set, heard eider ducks hooting, met the tripod cat who loves snuggles on the way home, and while I was sitting on the pavement trying to stop it rolling off the kerb in an excess of purring a hedgehog scuttled across the road beside us. Good evening
