Cesaire is basically saying that Nazism is the logical conclusion of how Europe has acted for five hundred years, and that the butchery of the world wars is basically what the rest of the world expects from them, and as scary as it is I am inclined to agree with him

before being brought back to Europe by fascists - essentially you could paraphrase that book as "it is fucking RICH that the continent that did the slave trade, the depopulation of the Americas, the Belgian Congo, and lord knows how many famines, is saying that Auschwitz is 'out of character'"

of the modus operandi of Western civilization going back to the early modern period? I'm increasingly inclined to the latter - one of the major writers in this vein is Aime Cesaire, particularly 'Discourse on Colonialism,' who argues that race hatred was inculcated in the colonies...

basically said that Jim Crow was the American fascism - the book made a comparison between Fascist paramilitaries (SA, blackshirts, etc.) and Jim Crow mob violence - which leads me to think, if so much of this is repurposed, is 'fascism' a sui generis thing or simply a nastier manifestation...

I recently read a book on African-American antifascists that argued that that tradition really began with the anti-lynching movement in the early 20th century before linking up with European antifascist movements - a number of Black writers of the period...

it's this sort of thing that makes me doubt the usefulness of the term 'fascism' as a thing-in-itself as so much of existing European fascism was on some level bringing colonial violence back to Europe and doing it against white people - this is most explicit in the Spanish Civil War...

the Nazis also explicitly compared - some would argue modeled (although people argue about this) what they were going to do Eastern Europe to what the US did to the West - they called the Slavs 'red indians' and Hitler said "The Volga shall be our Mississippi"

This is particularly important to understand because Trumpist authoritarianism is the descendent of Jim Crow far more than say Hitler or Pinochet or Orban, and it's going to look a lot more like 1930s Mississippi than 1930s Berlin.
