Bill Clinton banned assault weapons in 1994; mass shootings dropped by 43%.
George W. Bush and the GOP let the assault weapons ban expire in 2004; mass shootings increased by 245%.
These numbers tell the whole story.
Respectfully, it isn't the weapon, it is the shooter. The incidents have increased because people are more crazed today than they were, more blame it on the lack of Mental Health assistance than the weapon... Respectfully...
There isn't even a common and accepted definition for what an "assault weapon" is. Until that definition can be codified, proposed laws are using boulders to swat flies.
"Statistics are like a bikini. What they reveal is suggestive but what they conceal is vital." ~ Prof. A. Levenstein (d. 1986), Baruch School of Business
The problem isn't the lack of an "assault weapons" ban. It's the mass marketing push by NRA and gun makers. The problem is a flooded market.
Is this the part of the same overall drop in violent crime that happened during that time period, often attributed to the lead regulations that had been put into place not so long before it? Or is it a completely unrelated drop caused by banning bayonet lugs?
Let's do it right.. 1st we ban the Republican Party like we did to Communist.. then we eliminate all private citizens from owning or possessing assault weapons of any kind and may only be viewed at a museum..
I think it’s kind of interesting that pushes for more gun laws dramatically increased in last few years, at a time when demographics least likely to be Republican have become more armed (women, lgbt people, racial minorities), and fascism is on the rise. What is with that?
Care to find any statistics for how many “mass shootings” occur with long guns versus hand guns? And how many of those “mass shootings” are different than the ones you see plastered all over the news?
It's not the whole story. The assault weapons ban did nothing to curb the sale of AR15 platform rifles. All the gun manufacturers did was take off some of the 'tactical' fittings, like changing out the plastic stocks for wood ones, and made them look like hunting rifles.
That's a terribly dramatic increase! Why can't there be stricter gun control rules? Is the right to carry a gun really more important than the pursuit of happiness?
Okay then, actually read through the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 and tell me exactly how, for example, a ban on a "barrel shroud" stops violent crime, or how banning bayonet lugs did anything substantial.
Go on. Do it. Because 99% of the 1994 AWB was irrelevant garbage that did nothing.
I love that there are people debating this. If you ban assault weapons it will reduce deaths. There's nothing to be debated there.
BUT even better get some gun control on all weapons.
When I went to a US gun shop with another German exchange student at age 18 in 1996, I remember that magazines were limited to 10 rounds, handguns were only for 21 and older, but I could have bought a rifle or shotgun. Even that legal situation under Clinton seemed incredibly liberal to us.
For all you people doubting the numbers, give this a read. This study looks at 117 countries and compares the number of mass shootings to various factors, including gun ownership, depression rates, and crime rates. The only statistically significant link is guns. crimeresearch.org/wp-content/u...
Today's the sixth anniversary of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland where 14 students and three staff members were murdered.
You know I have seen over the years that when we call for and there is a national push for gun control that some people (I know of 1 guy) hear that and they like go buy more guns cases of ammo. It seems as if just talking about more gun laws actually boosts sales for gun companies. Are we helping?
I’d argue passage of The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) plays an outsized role, too. It’s also a GOP Congress and GW Bush that puts that into law in 2005, and it indemnified gun manufacturers, distributors, and dealers from liability for what use of their products can do.
'94-'03: 16 mass shootings
'04-'13: 33 mass shootings
'13-'22 (when social media explodes in popularity and mental illness / suicide spike): 87.
To me it's really clear that social media is the dominant factor.
No, it's not because of assault weapon bans. That's a preposterous assertion given that the majority of weapons used in these crimes aren't the weapons that were banned.
Sometimes i think that the only thing that will change the minds of foks opposing sensible gun control is them being involved in some of these shootings. Until then, thoughts and prayers is all that they offer
Can you cite the source of these numbers please? I absolutely agree with you but the numbers I’ve seen are muddier and I’d love to have this in my back pocket at family gatherings
I’m certain it’s part of the story, but it’s obviously not the whole one.
The ban expiration does not in itself explain why mass shootings increased by so much more than they’d previously dropped.
Every time I hear of a shooting like this I think to myself "Strange that Europeans are so much more peaceful".
And then I think: "Right, we have no access to guns that can kill so many people in an instant!"
And then I think: "Must be a coincidence!"
The majority of gun deaths in the most recent year for which data is available were suicides, which at least suggests that assault weapons – which should be banned! – are not the determinative factor in the overall rise of gun violence
Let's not be coy about just who was president. During GWB the Supreme Court decided Columbia v. Heller (2008) and have pushed further decisions around a right to bear arms.
Given that the ban was based on cosmetics rather than function of the weapon, it’s hard to buy that it’s the whole story. Maybe the magazine capacity part but that’s not the weapon itself. Semi auto rifles that functioned exactly the same were unaffected
