I have to say, the great Daniel Pinkwater himself replying to my comment about one of the treasured books of my childhood is a highlight of my Gen X life. Baconburg was my refuge from junior high since my lame friends would not agree to forming a chapter of the Wild Dada Ducks

And it obviously worked out. A meddling editor could've try to make you cut out big chunks of the Snarkout Boys because they "don't move the plot forward", but those are often the best parts!

Daniel Pinkwater's Young Adult Novel might be the perfect short story, at least for the weird kids. His novels are less well structured but they're so bizarrely funny and interesting that I don't care that he appears to be making up the plot as he goes along.

They're very well worth your time, I think. It's a brilliant 20(+1) volume treatise on character, relationships, and the human condition masquerading as a rousing adventure story set in the Napoleonic-era Royal Navy. Also lots of humor ranging from scatologic to Latin tags to dad-joke puns.
