I for one am pretty fixated on not having to spend even more years of my life wondering if Donald fucking Trump is going to deploy nuclear weapons

Meanwhile in Kansas. I absolutely get the fear over Biden’s polling, but remember that a lot of people are PISSED about the GOP taking away abortion rights.

This is one of the most dystopian signs I've ever seen. Republicans are quickly turning this country into an unrecognizable freakshow.

If we have more NYT/WaPo op-eds calling on Biden to exit than on SCOTUS mainlining an authoritarian presidency, that will give you a good read on where we are.

Importing this @volts.wtf thread from the bad place. It opens with a link to a piece that used official data to establish that yes, crime rates are indeed very much down recently. But here’s the thing, Project 2025’s Trump 2.0 promises to destroy that world in which we can “know” things like this.

I had the exact same experience in 10th grade. The teacher insisted that the green light in Gatsby symbolized hope (and that no other interpretation was correct). That experience, probably more than anything I read in college, turned me onto poststructuralism.

Her name is Morrissey so the title of the article should be "Reel Around the Fountain."

My brother was a business major in the 80s and reported that a lot of his classmates absolutely loved the Gordon Gecko character in Wall Street.

Republicans have effectively criminalized studying how information moves on the internet at the request of a handful of billionaires and racists. I was writing a book about this, but went and did some other thing. If someone wants my notes or wants to talk to me about who to talk to, let me know.

The coordinated attacks on misinformation researchers and academics who research power and propaganda are accelerating. It’s increasingly seen as dangerous to try and understand the reality of the systems being built around us and to remove our ability to know what truth is.

There are about 13 people who enter the comment section every time the NYT runs an article about Taylor Swift, and they post multi-paragraph rage-filled rants. Every time. The same people. This is giving the same energy.

These gamergate genealogies are fascinating. I distinctly remember her debating Frederick Brennan on some news show ten years ago. Now, he's done a political 180 and it looks like she has too.

Late in the day but @dancharnas.bsky.social's piece in Slate today is pure fire. It isn't so much about "Espresso" as what it draws from and why that music never got a clear shot in its time. (And as someone who was there listening to Top 40 at the time, he's completely correct in his assessment.)

What’s amazing about teaching the humanities today is the profound contradiction that circulates in public perceptions—humanists are 1) cloistered in their ivory tower reading and writing about socially disconnected ideas; while also 2) being so politically engaged we’re trying to indoctrinate folks

“Turning Red” is one of the realest movies I’ve ever seen about the adolescent experience, wtf this is such a galling reminder that stories about fathers and sons get framed as “universal” but stories about mothers and daughters are “niche” and “not everyone can relate”

My heart hurts for you. I'm also discovering that aging and ill parents is one of the worst things about adulthood. My mom's dementia is getting worse and my dad has had several health scares the last two years. Nothing prepares us for this crap.
