Was recently speaking to a reporter at a DC function, who pointed out that if wealthy people really wanted to do some work for democracy, they'd fund local news & journalists. I think about this every day.

I am hearing this from faculty from all over yes. Also, I’m hearing that some faculty salaries are largely stagnant, making it more difficult to just live when housing and other costs continue to skyrocket.

Today on Volts: the IRA contains substantial, easily accessible direct-pay tax credits for climate-friendly infrastructure upgrades at public schools -- but most public schools don't know about them. I talk with some folks trying to spread the word.

the erasure of 20+ years of news stories here is yet another sign that future generations will have much richer knowledge of the 1930s than they will the GW Bush and Obama years. The wayback machine is carrying a lot of weight these days. If that goes, adios: variety.com/2024/digital...

Wet bulb temp is one measure of heat stress. If it gets too close to body temp, no amount of sweat or air flow will help. We develop heat stroke, then die. A widely accepted limit of survivability is 35 °C (95 °F). Thankfully, it rarely gets this high on Earth… for now.

READ: Barcelona has a plan to create a city-wide network of quieter streets that are easier and safer to travel on foot or by bike. Instead of bumper-to-bumper cars, streets will be lined with trees, play parks, bike-lanes, benches and green people places.

Recently we've seen a vibrant debate on when the world will firmly pass 1.5C.

Over at @carbonbrief.org I weigh in with a new analysis, finding that it will most likely occur in the late 2020s or early 2030s in a world where emissions do not rapidly decrease. www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-wha...

The first chapter in Kim Stanley Robinson’s novel, The Ministry for the Future, describes a similar scene in India, where an entire city’s population dies b/c the wet bulb temp is too high and their bodies can’t cope. These are the very real future scenarios that keep me up at night.
